Journal of South America. Mount Fuji ahoy, me hearties! By the way I do hope that those who know me well appreciate how brave I am being on this holiday, talking glibly of 45th floors and cable cars. G is very proud of me. Arriving at Lake Ashi there is a boat tour offering more views from further along the water. The boats weren’t quite what we were expecting. Had Fuji once been the hideout of pirates? So, jam-packed trains eh? Eat your heart out Jeremy! Not a brilliant picture of Fuji but hope it gives...

On first arriving in Japan we were disappointed that the autumn colour had not yet arrived but the last week has blazed through any thoughts that we were too early for this year’s changes. So we have been enthusiastically joining the hordes in Momiji-gari (pilgrimage of maple viewing). Momiji means both Crimson leaves and baby’s hands (due to the shape of maple leaves. We spent two hours hanging on our guide’s every word and then went off to do some exploration of our own. Brilliant! We also visited the less famous (but better preserved) ruins of Herculaneum and of course made the mandatory hike up Mount Vesuvius.
