Oakland Streets: Bike Rack Art
http://www.oaklandstreets.com/2012/09/bike-rack-art.html
Saturday, September 1, 2012. With this whole new urbanism thing, bikes are taking their place more and more in the city landscape. One nice thing about that is that, unlike car parking lots, bike racks take up little space, can be installed inexpensively, and even provide an opportunity for public art. Other cities seem to be way ahead of Oakland in this department. San Francisco has an artist-designed bike rack program. Shellmound Street, Emeryville. Art gallery, Oakland. I recently visited Long Beach, ...

Oakland Streets: The Bike Lane Bottleneck

Friday, March 29, 2013. The Bike Lane Bottleneck. People should know that roadways are being designed today to accommodate drivers who have not yet been born. In some instances, these decisions are at the expense of bicyclists and pedestrians using those streets today." -. Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities Program Manager, City of Oakland. The bike lane: as far as infrastructure goes, it doesn't get much simpler. It's just a matter of splashing some paint down on the asphalt, right? For adding bike lanes.

Oakland Streets: Lessons from Chi-town
http://www.oaklandstreets.com/2012/05/lessons-from-chi-town.html
Tuesday, May 22, 2012. I took a trip to Chicago recently. I was curious to check it out, because I had read various things about how the former Mayor, Richard Daley, had revitalized the city by going green. Our hosts in Chicago told us all about the Green Exchange. A lamp factory-turned green economy hub. And green roofs. Yes, Chicago has Canadian geese just like Oakland. But unlike at Lake Merritt, the park actually puts up "don't feed the wildlife" signs. Between that and the subzero winters, t...A nic...

Oakland Streets: The Dredge Report
http://www.oaklandstreets.com/2008/12/dredge-report.html
Monday, December 8, 2008. I took these photos a few months ago at the Port of Oakland. Many people don't realize that the bay is dredged almost 24/7/365 to make it deep enough for all the container ships to dock. Otherwise soil erosion and runoff would make the bay too shallow for industrial uses. One of the things they've done with the spoils is create Middle Harbor Shoreline Park, down at the end of 7th Street. I had been there once before, but I went there again the other day to check it out. I don't ...

Sunday, July 15, 2012. This is Oakland in 2012: A line out the door by a torn-up street every Sunday afternoon for salsa dancing and Cuban food at Caña. Monday, February 23, 2009. As soon as the increase of population created a demand for wheeled traffic in Rome, the congestion became intolerable. One of Julius Caeser's first acts on seizing power was to ban wheeled traffic from the center of Rome during the day.". The City in History. Most pedestrian zones in the US have been failures. It also doesn't help, from my perspective, that this process is sometimes called "malling" a place, not exactly an inspiring term. But a book I read pointed out t...Close...

Oakland Streets: Why My Street Looks Like Beirut, and Other Mysteries Revealed
http://www.oaklandstreets.com/2012/11/why-my-street-looks-like-beirut-and.html
Sunday, November 25, 2012. Why My Street Looks Like Beirut, and Other Mysteries Revealed. I recently stumbled across an " OaklandStreets Fact Sheet. Q How do you determine which streets are going to be paved? It's not so different from everything else in life- an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And, perhaps, the rich get richer (or at least stay the same) while the poor get poorer. Also:. Q Why isn’t there enough money for street maintenance? According to the sheet, the backlog of maintenan...
