Chicago Beijing: October 2009
http://chicagobeijing.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Friday, October 16, 2009. Grading is pretty unpleasant, but now and then there's something really sweet. I was reading essays written by my first year Chinese students on the theme of "my hero". Their vocabulary is still very basic- they really can't say very much at all. But here's one that was. just. awww. My hero is my mom. She is fifty years old. She is a college student.". 我的英雄是我妈妈。她五十岁。她是大学生。 Sunday, October 11, 2009. Sister of My Heart. It is written for the writer, not for some unimaginable reader.

Chicago Beijing: Mining Towns (Jiufen, Jinguashi)
http://chicagobeijing.blogspot.com/2012/07/jiufen-jinguashi.html
Thursday, July 26, 2012. Mining Towns (Jiufen, Jinguashi). That same weekend, I also went to Jiufen with one of my grad school classmates. Jiufen is an old mining town outside of Taipei. It was also the inspiration for the little town in the movie Spirited Away. Someone with more time than me made an awesome set of comparison shots. I didn't really take enough pictures to do the place justice, but here are a few. First, a couple of shots from the bus-stop in Ruifang. Narrow Passageway in Jiufen.

Chicago Beijing: June 2012
http://chicagobeijing.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Wednesday, June 27, 2012. Dragon Boat Festival and Library Day. These days I am so busy, it's hard to find time for sleep. Not busy in a bad way, of course, quite the reverse. The days are full of interesting learning and experiences. Saturday was Duanwu jie. I also noticed what I think was a Philippines team, wheeling around doing exercises and stretches. Meanwhile, our school provided an audience team. Well, every contest needs an audience, right? They were really fast. Maybe a type of cookie? You migh...

Chicago Beijing: July 2009
http://chicagobeijing.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
Monday, July 20, 2009. We both always wish that the place were clean all the time, but neither of us care about it THAT much. So we live in congenial semi-squalor. Just like most people, I think. We'll see if it lasts.). Saturday, July 11, 2009. If the deal goes through, I'm sure we'll change a lot of things- just the presence of us and the basic necessities of our lives will change the feeling of the place. For example, there's currently not a single bookshelf in it! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Chicago Beijing: December 2009
http://chicagobeijing.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, December 31, 2009. It was odd walking out of my building yesterday and suddenly seeing a giant rat. I mean, a GIANT rat, taller than us. It turns out that the giant rat is a Chicago union tradition, signaling a strike, and perhaps in particular a strike where there are or may be scabs involved. As an object and a symbol, it is really effectively threatening looking, I. Wednesday, December 30, 2009. I have no idea. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Blogs I May Read.

Chicago Beijing: Essays in Chinese
http://chicagobeijing.blogspot.com/2012/07/i-realized-that-in-my-last-post-i.html
Sunday, July 01, 2012. On Monday, to my great annoyance, my internet was down. Actually it started Sunday night. When by Monday night it still wasn't back, I texted the landlord. He is such a nice guy! Ochazuke at Cafe Zabu. To taste like. (Two of my three textbooks are in the background of this photo.). Cafeteria lunch, includes some blood tofu (upper right). The famous instance of it in the Songs of the South. They used it often when a person's body was unavailable for burial, which seems quite practic...

Chicago Beijing: May 2010
http://chicagobeijing.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, May 29, 2010. We flew to my grad school town on Thursday. This picture was taken on the plane. This is what the flight attendant saw, and yet still she asked me, "Do you have any trash you want to get rid of sir? And no, she wasn't talking about Pocket of Bolts, because when I looked up she got flustered and said, "I mean, ma'am." I think it's hopeless. We picked up a rental car (which had awesome satellite radio! Better with sunglasses, I think! Just post-defense, when I'd been told that I wou...

Chicago Beijing: November 2009
http://chicagobeijing.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Saturday, November 14, 2009. Fear of the Ocean. Well, maybe very often if you actually *live* in Miami, or Hawaii. but for me it's a rare experience. Not mind you that I am the picture of elegance diving under wave or anything. I tend to plug my nose and leave my ankles up in the air. Pocket of Bolts said, If you don't plug your nose, it's like saline nasal rinse. Good point! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Fear of the Ocean. Blogs I May Read. Chicago Beijing: Week of (Mostly) Work
http://chicagobeijing.blogspot.com/2012/07/week-of-work.html
Saturday, July 07, 2012. Week of (Mostly) Work. I realize I have let a whole week pass without writing. But the days are so full. Outdoor Hotspring at Xin Beitou. The outdoor place was fun but crowded. There were various pools of different temperatures and a cold shower. It didn't seem especially clean, but hey, everyone else was in there. They wouldn't keep going in there if there were some serious hygiene problem right? As usual, my lackadaisical approach to hygiene had no bad consequences. Things are ...
