Chinese Apples: May 2011

An American Werewolf in Amsterdam. Monday, May 2, 2011. What Is Community (and why we need to have a conversation about it) – Part 1b. Wow, I really started a conversation with my last post about community. Thanks to everyone who stepped up to the plate and commented. I appreciate it. I think community is like that, too. It’s a frightening thing to try and create some sort of social unit, by yourself, from scratch. What if no one is interested? Worse, what if everyone thinks you’re weird for trying?

Chinese Apples: January 2009
http://chineseapples.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html
An American Werewolf in Amsterdam. Saturday, January 31, 2009. Apologies for the extended silence around these parts. Catching up to my life and all that. But it's good, I'm here, I'm alive, I'm thriving. I have to admit, I had some trepidation about spending Christmas in Florida. It would be warm. It would be familiar. What if I didn't want to come back? Common room) and relief swept over me in a wave. I really was home. But I'm very certain about the present. And that's a good thing. Expect more postin...

Chinese Apples: July 2009
http://chineseapples.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
An American Werewolf in Amsterdam. Thursday, July 9, 2009. I have finally returned to Florida, the Sunshine State, which is ironically in the middle of one of the wettest summers on record. But I still have a backlog of posts about life in Amsterdam to get up. So for the time being this blog will continue. Thanks so much to everyone who has been reading! For more, check out this post. For pictures of the canals, markets and more street pics, and this post. For some shots of our chapel). We continue our t...

Chinese Apples: April 2009
http://chineseapples.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
An American Werewolf in Amsterdam. Thursday, April 30, 2009. Yesterday was Queen's Day in The Netherlands, a major national holiday. I will have a full post with pictures up later, but as lovely as the day was in Amsterdam tragedy struck elsewhere. The Royal Family was in a parade in Apeldoorn when a rogue motorist. Ploughed into the crowd. Apparently he was trying to hit the royal bus. He failed at this, but several people have died and many more were injured. Monday, April 27, 2009. As I write this he ...

Amsterdays: November 2005
http://amsterdays.blogspot.com/2005_11_01_archive.html
Welcome to my blog! Stop here any time you're interestd in what I'm up to in Amsterdam. I'll be posting journals and pics frequently. Monday, November 28, 2005. I had to calculate all of my assets and debts for the scholarship application. You look really poor on paper when you're a dependant volunteer for 8 out of 12 months. My dad and I had a few good laughs about my finances, which maybe is a little disconserting since he's a financial advisor. Posted by Melissa @ 3:50 PM. Sunday, November 27, 2005.

Chinese Apples: Why We Need Community (and why I have to write about it) - Part 1
http://chineseapples.blogspot.com/2011/04/why-we-need-community-and-why-i-have-to.html
An American Werewolf in Amsterdam. Monday, April 25, 2011. Why We Need Community (and why I have to write about it) - Part 1. Any way you slice it, I’m a rank beginner. Which is too bad, because I think that people were really intended to live together. And the fact that we no longer do is what makes us feel lonely and disconnected in the modern world. So I am going to write something about community living here not because I’m an expert on the subject, but because I have experienced it and most pe...

Chinese Apples: December 2008
http://chineseapples.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
An American Werewolf in Amsterdam. Monday, December 22, 2008. I guess what I'm saying is, if anyone in Florida wants to get together and spreekt Nederlands met me. In the meantime, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thursday, December 18, 2008. They stayed for a couple of nights while arrangements were made for them and then they left (the mother completely recovered, by the way). And now, a week or two later, they're back to stay for a while! On a purely meditative note: it occurred to me yest...

Chinese Apples: Amsterdam Questions Answered
http://chineseapples.blogspot.com/2008/11/amsterdam-questions-answered.html
An American Werewolf in Amsterdam. Tuesday, November 4, 2008. I thought I'd tackle a couple of questions that some commentors have posed. The answers aren't short, but they do involve pictures, so stick with me! First of all, my dad asks whether I've felt acceptance as an American living in Europe. Well, since their main contribution to Dutch culture is endless waves of drunken tourists, you can see how even unfailingly affable Nederlanders. Might get a little annoyed. Reflects this. It contains imag...

The Rants of Issachar: Michael Ignatieff - Playing politics with abortions
http://issachar.gorman.cc/2010/02/michael-ignatieff-playing-politics-with.html
The Rants of Issachar. Thursday, February 04, 2010. Michael Ignatieff - Playing politics with abortions. I voted for the Conservatives in the last election. I thought Stéphane Dion and his platform were just a bad idea. But I like the idea of a revived Liberal party. I want to be faced with a choice between two excellent parties with good candidates. Discussions about abortion in Canada largely take place outside of the political arena and are focussed on changing minds than on changing laws and this is ...

Important decision / eine wichtige Entscheidung. Coupla days ago I made a decision. I will try to post all my stuff in 2 languages from now on; in English and in German. I felt like I wanted to invite some of my German-speaking friends to join in to my journey of faith and life. Vor ein paar Tagen traf ich eine Entscheidung. Von jetzt an werde ich versuchen alle meine Einträge in 2 Sprachen zu veröffentlichen: auf Englisch und auf Deutsch. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.
