A Bad Asian Goes to Asia…. Day 2: Tuesday, July 12, 2011 — I Have Cankles. It’s 4:30 PM EST, 10:30 PM Paris time, or 3:30 AM Bangkok time. I’m now on a 11-hour flight from Paris to Bangkok via Thai Airways, and there’s about 2.5 hours left as I write this entry. I’m not easily fooled (cynic that I am) but I just didn’t want to deal with the hassles when I am jetlagged. The quoted rate was unbelievable. For a tour that began at 6:30 AM and ended around 5 PM (and includes my driver/guide’s expertise, petrol, admittance to Doi Suthep, breakfast, lunch at a local Thai restaurant, and cold drinks) was only 1800 baht ($59). Who wouldn't want to be us? Sunday, July 29, 2012. Somehow I blinked and my sweet, chubby, blond baby grew up into this handsome, dark, curly haired young man. Carter turned 15 last week. Got his driver's permit and will be a sophomore this fall. I swear I was just doing these exact same things yesterday! Little do they know how his cheeks used to be so chubby they bounced when he ran. And he used to call tunnels "the loo," and drove his Thomas train through the Loo and around the figure 8 track for hours.

Who wouldn't want to be us? Friday, January 27, 2012. I have always found shopping therapeutic. Retail therapy if you will. There are worse vices I'm sure. I could be smoking crack or drinking cough syrup for instance. But I've always loved to shop. I'm afraid my daughter does too. She always wants to go and just look around, she tells me. And the looking leads to touching which leads to buying. Is it ok to be a social shopper much like a social drinker vs a singular shopper instead of a solo drinker?

Since then I have done some teaching at other high schools and Carter's old middle school and the alternative high school for the behaviorally and mentally challenged. In fact the bulk of my days are at the alternative school. The classes are small, the metal detector and isolation rooms are different, but the kids are awesome. So to quote the vice principalas she took my resume "Let's see how this plays out.".
