The BOGOF Blog: June 2014
http://marieandjohn.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Being the random musings of Marie and John. Thursday, June 19, 2014. I've said before that the bigger the city, the worse the view. Today we're in Istanbul and the veranda view is of a part demolished building. Wonderful. The view on the other side is of a very very busy waterway, and a nice park area. And out neighbour, one of the Costa ships. Just a short blog as today is our last full day and we're busy packing. No blog tomorrow as we'll be flying home. Sob sob sob. Thursday, June 19, 2014. Tonight is...

Being the random musings of Marie and John. Tuesday, November 11, 2014. Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics. And did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind. In some faithful heart is your memory enshrined? And, though you died back in 1916,. To that loyal heart are you forever nineteen? Or are you a stranger, without even a name,. Forever enshrined behind some glass pane,. In an old photograph, torn and tattered and stained,. And fading to yellow in a brown leather frame? From No Man's Land by Eric Bogle.
The BOGOF Blog: New Year resolutions – sort of
http://marieandjohn.blogspot.com/2015/01/new-year-resolutions-sort-of.html
Being the random musings of Marie and John. Sunday, January 04, 2015. New Year resolutions – sort of. At this time of year it’s customary to produce a ‘New Year’s resolutions list’. I don’t ‘do’ resolutions so instead here is my wish/want list. Win the Euro lottery. £10m would be nice but anything over £50m would be preferable. Make a start on reading through the massive collection of books I’ve accumulated both in hard copy and on my kindle. Get back to playing the piano and the clarinet. For persons un...
The BOGOF Blog: Good customer service
http://marieandjohn.blogspot.com/2015/01/good-customer-service.html
Being the random musings of Marie and John. Friday, January 16, 2015. Now that John’s retired there's no need for us to do our weekly grocery shop at Morrisons on an evening. Thankfully two new large Sainsburys and Tesco’s opened recently so we gave them both a try. Tesco had the edge on Sainsburys so we decided to start shop there. Just before Christmas we had an encounter with a member of staff from the fruit and veg department who has the honour of being one of the rudest people I have ever met. For p...

Being the random musings of Marie and John. Friday, June 12, 2015. I am SO sorry for not blogging these past – coughs – months. Regular readers – if we have any left! In our defence, we’ve never really led exciting lives, and it would seem that since John took early retirement from work, we’re like little hermits. Win the Euro lottery. £10m would be nice but anything over £50m would be preferable. My kindle library is a couple of books lighter. Get back to playing the piano and the clarinet. Spend less t...

Gertie's makes and bakes: June 2015
http://gertiesmakesandbakes.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Gertie's makes and bakes. Sunday, 28 June 2015. June's bake of the month. I’m going back to basics for this month’s bake of the month, and what could be more basic than a sponge cake. The traditional two, four method is probably one of the first cake recipes that children (and men.) are taught when they embark on their baking journey. It’s so easy to remember – two eggs and four oz’s of butter, sugar and flour. 1 level tea-spoon of baking powder. 1 lemon, grated. 4 table-spoons of icing sugar. Put the su...

Gertie's makes and bakes: May's bake of the month
http://gertiesmakesandbakes.blogspot.com/2015/05/mays-bake-of-month.html
Gertie's makes and bakes. Friday, 29 May 2015. May's bake of the month. Who doesn’t love bourbon biscuits? These were my favourite (and still are if I’m honest) as a child. I would break the biscuit into two (getting crumbs everywhere much to the annoyance of my mam! And eat the top layer first then the yummy creamy bottom. 2 oz/50g margarine (or softened butter if you prefer). 2 oz/50g caster sugar. 1 tbsp golden syrup. 4oz/110g plain flour, plus a little extra if needed. 189; tsp bicarbonate soda.

Gertie's makes and bakes: March 2015
http://gertiesmakesandbakes.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Gertie's makes and bakes. Tuesday, 31 March 2015. March’s bake of the month. Opps I nearly did it again! These months are really flying by. Before I know it, Christmas will be here. So what have I got for you this month? How does double chocolate chip cookies sound. They’re really easy to make but incredibly yummy. Or, what about adding some nuts to the cookies. Chopped walnuts, pecans, Brazil, macadamia would work. The possibilities are endless. Just have fun making and eating them. 2 tbsp golden syrup.

Gertie's makes and bakes: October 2014
http://gertiesmakesandbakes.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Gertie's makes and bakes. Sunday, 19 October 2014. I really didn’t think I’d be away so long. When I last blogged it was summer and now it’s nearly Halloween! So what have I been up to? I managed to fulfil (nearly) all the things I’d mentioned my last post. Once my batteries had been recharged I felt ready to get back to all things fabric. First on the list of things to make were another cushion cover and a back cover for Wizzy (my wheelchair). I was fed up with always having a wet back whenever I sat in...

Gertie's makes and bakes: The wanderer returns
http://gertiesmakesandbakes.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-wanderer-returns.html
Gertie's makes and bakes. Sunday, 21 June 2015. Sorry for the radio silence. Whilst I love sewing I find I need to recharge my batteries every now and then so for the past few weeks I’ve only been doing just a small amount of sewing – hence the lack of postings. I’ve been using the time to catch up on some reading. I’m slightly dyslexic so it takes me a while to finish a book. I’ve also been trying to get my head around social media for Gertie’s Bags business. Have a great week. 21 June 2015 at 19:00.

Gertie's makes and bakes: January 2015
http://gertiesmakesandbakes.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Gertie's makes and bakes. Sunday, 25 January 2015. January's bake of the month. This is a quite a traditional northern bake, though I’m sure other counties will have something similar. Like most traditional bakes there was no recipe for it. I remember asking my mam for it and said she ‘just made it’. Thankfully it only has a couple of ingredients so I was able to work out the quantities. I took the photos during Christmas so excuse the decorations. 6oz block margarine or butter. Large tin of corned beef.

Gertie's makes and bakes: April 2015
http://gertiesmakesandbakes.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Gertie's makes and bakes. Thursday, 30 April 2015. April's bake of the month. Made it by the skin of my teeth again. Chocolate cake or a simple plain cake. When you want can’t decide which cake to have, why not have both. A marble cake is perfect when you want the best of both worlds. Whilst it looks impressive, it really is so easy to make. The beauty of this cake is you can mix and match the flavours. How about a chocolate and orange or chocolate and coffee. The possibilities are endless. Pour half of ...

http://gertiesmakesandbakes.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Gertie's makes and bakes. Sunday, 23 November 2014. I was having a think about what Christmas decorations I could make this year. I didn’t fancy making anything with fabric so had a look around on pinterest for ideas. There were some lovely things to make but one really caught my eye, a bauble wreath. Here’s what I did. I did a bit of research on google and found that the various ‘pound’ shops and supermarkets were offering good deals on baubles. Mine came from Tesco (£5 for a box of...Of the two boxes I...

Being the random musings of Marie and John. Thursday, January 19, 2017. Because I don’t really like tomatoes (I find them quite sickly) when it comes to things like spaghetti bolognaise and lasagne I tend to stick with the sauces that I know ‘don’t taste of tomatoes’. When we’re making lasagne I’ll use Dolmio low fat bolognaise sauce and for spaghetti it’s Colman’s spaghetti bolognaise mix. After taking a couple of mouthfuls I turned to John and commented, “it tastes different today”. I can sympathise as...

Our life as a happily married couple. Monday, February 20, 2012. We took Dylan to House of Air, an indoor trampoline park, located in The Presidio in SF. We reserved 1 hr of jumping time, which was enough. We bounced around until our stomachs turned! Jon bouncing.. A video of us bouncing.LOL. Sunday, January 29, 2012. It snowed a lot in Tahoe a week ago, and the weather was looking great, so we decided at the last minute to go snowboarding! It was practically a 2 for 1 deal! Tuesday, December 20, 2011.
