Born and reared in Switzerland, Mark Baumgartner lives and works in New York City since 1988. In 1994 he opened his Studio for Architecture, Design and Fabrication. He invents, designs and builds objects that relate to functional design. Recurring themes are the Monolith Series. And the Modular Series. His main interests lay in the architectural exploration of the object that is scaled to the human body and in the aesthetics of engineering. He has also provided services as a Consultant on Percent for Art.

Each member submits to the same basics such as: a main structural grid consisting of a few modular parts that allow for quick assembly/disassembly and elements that can be added to the structural grid. The units are additive and can usually grow in its dimension or can split into different directions.

Mark Baum: Sculptor at Large
Most of my work is created from wood recovered from hurricanes, Andrew, Katrina, and Wilma. Miami has some of the most beautiful hardwoods growing in our back yards and along our streets. Our local mahoganies are prized all over the world as the finest. By using trees fallen in hurricanes, I feel I can bring new life to something that might otherwise end up as mulch. My work is currently available to view by appointment in my studio space.
