Winged Things: November 2014
http://reuvenmartin.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Ontario Nature Listservs, Groups and Forums. Sunday, November 30, 2014. I haven't been getting out as much as I like recently due to school, but November is often an excellent time to look for birds and I've seen a few cool things recently. Now is the time to check those sheltered spots with open water! Mink become much easier to see after a bit of ice forms on the rivers. I enticed this guy a bit closer with some squeaking. Winged Things: July 2015
http://reuvenmartin.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Ontario Nature Listservs, Groups and Forums. Monday, July 27, 2015. Although most plants produce their own energy (sugars) from the sun, we have a variety of plants that parasitise other organisms and have no chlorophyll. Note that this is different from the carnivorous plants I've talked about before, which are getting nutrients from another source but are still producing sugars from the sun. Clump of Spotted Coralroot. Beechdrops parasitises trees directly, rather than only doing so through fungi like ...

Nature Nuggets: June 2015
http://pawsnaturenuggets.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 30 June 2015. Linear hiking in Chatham-Kent. I was involved in the inventory of the 34 km section of the east half of this corridor in 2012. At that time, we found some new plants for C-K, as well as several populations of Species At Risk. Several very small patches of endangered Tallgrass Prairie habitat were discovered as well. This year we are covering the west 34 km section and we are hoping for similar interesting discoveries. Wetland adjacent to woodland. Frogs are widespread, although not...

Nature Nuggets: Lions and tigers and bears....in Rondeau...oh my....
http://pawsnaturenuggets.blogspot.com/2015/08/lions-and-tigers-and-bearsin-rondeauoh.html
Thursday, 13 August 2015. Lions and tigers and bears.in Rondeau.oh my. And rattlesnakes too.OH MY! With all due respect to Dorothy on the Wizard of Oz, this is not Kansas, and here at Rondeau there are lions and tigers and bears also.and rattlesnakes, too! First, the lions. Have you ever been walking along the beach, just in from the edge of the grassy vegetation, and noticed some conical, round depressions in the sand? There are at least a couple of types of 'tigers' which occur at Rondeau, both of whic...

Winged Things: Bruce Peninsula Specialty Birds
http://reuvenmartin.blogspot.com/2015/06/bruce-peninsula-specialty-birds.html
Ontario Nature Listservs, Groups and Forums. Saturday, June 13, 2015. Bruce Peninsula Specialty Birds. From a birder's perspective, the Bruce Peninsula is a great spot, but one bird stands out: Brewer's Blackbird. Although a reasonably common breeder on the peninsula, they are otherwise very rare in Southern Ontario. As I'd never been at the right time of year, Brewer's Blackbird was a much anticipated lifer. Our first pair was right along Highway 6, sitting on the fenceposts along the road. Sauble Beach...

Winged Things: Carnivorous Plants on the Bruce Peninsula
http://reuvenmartin.blogspot.com/2015/06/carnivorous-plants-on-bruce-peninsula.html
Ontario Nature Listservs, Groups and Forums. Thursday, June 11, 2015. Carnivorous Plants on the Bruce Peninsula. One group that is always fun are the carnivorous plants, a number of species of which are found in wet, nutrient-limited habitats like bogs and fens across Ontario. These habitats are common on the Bruce Peninsula and we saw a variety of species. The most spectacular of our carnivorous plants is definitely the Pitcher Plant. The slippery pitchers drown and digest insects, and are often lar...

Winged Things: October 2014
http://reuvenmartin.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Ontario Nature Listservs, Groups and Forums. Tuesday, October 21, 2014. Red-winged Blackbirds feeding on maple keys. Last weekend I came across a large flock of Red-winged Blackbirds feeding on Manitoba Maple keys in Mississauga. These seeds are a favourite food of Evening Grosbeaks but I can't recall seeing any other species of bird feeding on them, although I'm sure it happens very regularly. Shows that older males are dominant at roost sites. Links to this post. Friday, October 10, 2014. I saw 3 diffe...

Nature Nuggets: February 2015
http://pawsnaturenuggets.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 25 February 2015. A great day to play with a new toy. Today was a relatively nice day to be out. Bright sunshine, winds that were tolerable from the ENE, and temperatures.well they were still well below normal, reaching a high of only -11C, but that is a lot better than most days! Fast forward to the early fall of 2014, and Canon announced it! Today I decided to do some field tests with it, even if there wasn't anything too exciting to photograph. I mean it wouldn't do to really need it fo...

Winged Things: Orchid Hunting
http://reuvenmartin.blogspot.com/2015/06/orchid-hunting.html
Ontario Nature Listservs, Groups and Forums. Wednesday, June 10, 2015. One of the most sought-after groups of plants in Ontario (and all over the world) is the orchids. They are highly diverse, many species are strikingly beautiful, and many are very hard to find. Size comparison with Yellow Lady's Slipper. A variety of coralroots can be found on the Bruce Peninsula, with the most common at this time of year being the Striped Coralroot. Most coralroots have no leaves or chlorophyll, and obtain all th...
