Light Impressions: January 2009

Musings on photography, historic and alternative printing processes, image making and art. There are some entries containing the nudity when discussing photographer's work. Friday, January 30, 2009. From Digital to Cyanotype. Alternative processes for photography are most often UV light. The resurgence of interest in alternative photographic printing in relative terms just preceded the emergence of widespread digital photography. William Crawford's The Keepers of Light. On an Epson 3800. Capabilities of ...
Light Impressions: November 2008

Musings on photography, historic and alternative printing processes, image making and art. There are some entries containing the nudity when discussing photographer's work. Monday, November 17, 2008. Let's start at the beginning: contact printing frames. The most common piece of equipment you will come across in alternative photographic processes. First, many alternative processes are only sensitive to UV light. Because of the impracticality of producing a UV enlarger. Enough of these asides - in the nex...
Light Impressions: Beth Moon

Musings on photography, historic and alternative printing processes, image making and art. There are some entries containing the nudity when discussing photographer's work. Sunday, November 16, 2008. And I have been running across each other more and more frequently. I met Beth briefly through Mark Nelson. When he was working with her on his Precision Digital Negatives. 160;- a process I find challenging even to read about! When I talked to Beth - in our class on polymer plate photogravure. I have been s...

Photogravure
http://susanvossgravures.blogspot.com/2009/04/im-back.html
Thursday, April 16, 2009. Posted by Susan Daly Voss. August 1, 2010 at 2:59 PM. Is the pdn system the one you would recommend? I would like to standardise as much as possible on one system (no sense in re-inventing the wheel after all)and from your images it looks very good. Some of the work I have seen on other sites has been very dark in tonality and I am looking for images more akin to your own. Thanks again, Keith. August 11, 2010 at 5:28 AM. This is some incredible stuff. May 24, 2011 at 9:22 PM.

Photogravure: First print
http://susanvossgravures.blogspot.com/2007/02/blog-post.html
Wednesday, February 21, 2007. So here is a scan of a gravure I printed today. size is 7 x 4.5. Overall I'm pleased, but of course this image doesn't have obvious gradient tones that are more difficult. I'll give that a try next. I'd gotten a new paper cutter for cutting plates, and I let the plate slip as I cut it, making it out of square. No biggie, since this is just a test print, but I need to practice with the cutter. Both of these images enlarge if you click on them. Posted by Susan Daly Voss. Nuarc...

Photogravure: smooth tones
http://susanvossgravures.blogspot.com/2007/05/smooth-tones.html
Tuesday, May 8, 2007. I was beginning to feel I would never get smooth tones out of this process, but today I finally got it right. When I decided to print this image I thought it would be the perfect one to either make me or break me in this regard since it's all about smooth tones. What a relief! Posted by Susan Daly Voss. It looks like you're hitting your stride with this technique. Very beautiful. Congrats! May 24, 2007 at 1:19 PM. The image of the raddishes is stunning. May 27, 2007 at 1:13 PM.

Photogravure: latest test print
http://susanvossgravures.blogspot.com/2007/03/latest-test-print.html
Sunday, March 4, 2007. The uneven areas in the print are in the original, by the way. they are supposed to be there :o) The print IS a little contrasty though, and I expect to deal with my exposures and curves in more detail next. Need to find those middle tones. There are two closeups of the print below. the tiny horizontal lines are there, but you have to look hard to see them. Posted by Susan Daly Voss. Can you explain your technique for avoiding the midtone measels on your gravure? I've set up this b...

Photogravure: new radishes print
http://susanvossgravures.blogspot.com/2007/04/new-radishes-print.html
Wednesday, April 11, 2007. Click image for closeup. For those unfamiliar with this process, the above image is an etching. ink on paper. printed with an intaglio etching press. The printing plate was made from a photograph. For more information, see the sidebar to the right. Posted by Susan Daly Voss. I'll bet it looks even better in print (instead of on the web). Nicely done. Congrats! April 13, 2007 at 5:55 PM. Congratulation for your beautiful work and your very interresting blog! Gravure is an etchin...
