Are Standups The Answer? – Mark Phelps
http://www.markphelps.me/2015/06/06/are-standups-the-answer.html
Are Standups The Answer? June 6, 2015. As a software engineer working during the ‘Agile Renaissance’, you’ve no doubt participated in or at least heard about the practice of standups. For the uninitiated, standups are a simple practice in which developers and stakeholders get together on a regular, usually daily, basis to report on their individual statuses. Each team member gets a small sliver of time to report three things:. What did you do yesterday. What do you plan to do today. My main gripe with st...
Tiny Types – Mark Phelps
http://www.markphelps.me/2014/12/09/tiny-types.html
December 9, 2014. I was recently introduced to a ‘mini-pattern’ called ‘Tiny Types’ by a co-worker. It boils down to creating types where you would normally use primatives. For example lets say you have the following code in your application:. The problem comes into play when you go to construct a CoffeeShop object. It can be awkard and require you to recall the correct order of parameters:. Is it address here? Or is it name? Create the coffee shop here. Refactoring our initial example with Tiny Types:.
Don't Use default_scope For Multi-tenancy – Mark Phelps
http://www.markphelps.me/2014/12/30/dont-use-default-scope-in-rails.html
Don't Use default scope For Multi-tenancy. December 30, 2014. I learned a lot while developing my app StudioJoy. Which is a Rails 3.2 application. Here’s a look at how I went from using default scope and back again and why. StudioJoy is a multi-tenant application, meaning that each studio (or tenant) lives in the same shared database. Obviously we want to limit access of a studio’s data to only that studio and disallow access to all others. Gem or by rolling your own. This would generate the SQL:. This w...
You Down With MVP? – Mark Phelps
http://www.markphelps.me/2014/11/15/you-down-with-mvp.html
You Down With MVP? November 15, 2014. This is the second in a series of posts describing my failure of getting my web app StudioJoy off the ground and what I learned in the process. Of this series I described how I came up with the initial idea and also alluded to some false assumptions that I made during that time. In this post I’ll cover how I went about developing the actual product and some missteps I made along the way. Armed with an idea and some free time I set out to create a MVP. A studio would ...
Wrap Your Dependencies – Mark Phelps
http://www.markphelps.me/2015/07/30/wrap-your-dependencies.html
July 30, 2015. These days it’s almost impossible to write an application that doesn’t depend on any third party code. Ruby/Rails and Bundler. All of these benefits of using external gems do come with some downsides however. The fact that your are introducing code that you yourself did not write means that you are also slightly relinquishing control. Let’s imagine that we are writing an application that has the business requirement to post messages to Slack. And start to implement our notification code.
