Developer PC 2013 – codeface
https://markrendle.wordpress.com/2013/08/19/developer-pc-2013
August 19, 2013. For a proper workstation, you still can’t beat a desktop, and since I’ve got a lot of work to do and I’ll be working at home on most of it, I decided to invest in one. Thanks to the intricacies of UK VAT regulations, I needed to spend upward of 2,000 on it, which task I set about with vim and vigour. Having had some very noisy self-builds in the past, the idea of a quiet PC rather appealed, and their Serenity Pro Gamer. Looked like an excellent starting point. Core i7 4770K 3.5GHz CPU.

Minimalist Development with Nancy and Simple.Data. Traditional .NET development frameworks tend to be big, and cover all possible eventualities, and for many projects this is A Good Thing. But for just as many, if not more, projects, a full web stack like ASP.NET or a complex ORM like Entity Framework or NHibernate is just overkill, and adds unnecessary complexity. This is A Bad Thing. Using these tools, in under an hour, we’ll create a working web application – with hardly any code at all. Microsoft’s A...
Simple.Data 2.0 – codeface
https://markrendle.wordpress.com/2013/09/18/simple-data-2-0
Simple.Data 2.0. September 18, 2013. Today I started work on the next version of Simple.Data. Even though there hasn’t been an actual, official release of 1.0 yet. That’s something I hope to rectify in the next week or so, by fixing the few remaining issues and hoping the documentation. Is sufficient, although not exhaustive. Once that’s done, there are a few headline features for the 2.0 release:. You’ll be able to create a batch of operations and execute it with a single connect-run-disconnect process&...

January 14, 2014. If you can write good code when those about you,. Are breaking builds and blaming it on you;. If you can trust your tests when others doubt you,. And write more tests to cover their code too;. If you can patch and not be bored by patching,. And never prematurely optimise;. Or understand Haskell’s pattern-matching,. And not expect a coding Nobel Prize:. If you can branch and not commit to master;. Or write terse code – and not make golf your aim;. If your app can recover from disaster.
Reality is an illusion – .NET OSS is hard – codeface
https://markrendle.wordpress.com/2013/09/26/reality-is-an-illusion-net-oss-is-hard
Reality is an illusion – .NET OSS is hard. September 26, 2013. So lots of posts over the last few days about that old chestnut, OSS and .NET:. Perception is Reality .NET OSS is DOA. Perception is Reality .NET OSS Is Getting Better. Perception is Reality The state of OSS in .NET. A link to their post with a rude comment about how they said it better. Ruby, Node, etc. are text-based; text-based is easier to extend. NET is Visual Studio-based; Visual Studio is harder to extend. NET is an unusual ecosystem.

Jon Skeet's coding blog. Backwards compatibility is (still) hard. June 3, 2015. At the moment, I’m spending a fair amount of time thinking about a new version of the C# API and codegen for Protocol Buffers. As well as other APIs for interacting with Google services. While that’s the context for this post, I want to make it very clear that this is still a. Context and current state: the builder pattern. No further development on Simple.Web. July 25, 2014. I’ve let this little fact out on Twitter, so here’s a little more detail on why I’m not going to be working on Simple.Web any more. Whenever people asked why I wrote Simple.Web, I would reply because Microsoft broke Web API . Eventually, at an MVP Summit, Scott Hanselman had me stand in front of the Web API development team and explain what it was that they had broken, which was awkward. I started writing Zudio. And it’s got a class-level RoutePrefix a...

Wednesday, 25 February 2015. First impressions: Fifa 15. After waiting in vain for the prices of EA Sport's annual behemoth to drop, I finally swallowed my pride and paid just under full price for this. Before I got it, I sunk hours into Fifa 12. The most recent title in the series I owned, so I could better appreciate all the tweaks in the new release. I never experienced. You can now dribble past defenders and leave them sliding haplessly around. However, shots are now inexplicably almost alway...Marti...
