I was a pen and ink artist long before I ever dreamt of writing a walking guide. My early friendship with Alfred Wainwright came from a shared love of the medium and the great walking landscapes of the north. Now, with the Lakeland Fellranger series complete, I've re-wound the tape and re-charged my 'crow quill' pen with Indian ink to explore again the unique magic of pen and ink. Page 1 of 1. Alfred Wainwright | Welcome

Some Personal Notes in Conclusion. In the very personal way AW wrote his books, he would finish each guide by sharing some reflections under this title banner. So it seems apt to use the banner here for all I sense a continuity of his influence on me, gleaned not just through the pleasure I derived from his cleverly crafted writing and impeccable line drawings, but through the warmth of his friendship and generous encouragement. Who was this enigma? Wainwright was quiet, self-centred and confident. H...

Distance: 10¼km/6½ miles time: 5½ hours ascent: 760m/2490ft grade: quite strenuous. In the road-end car park (GR 469 107) at the head of Haweswater, located six miles from Bampton, four miles on from the dam, two miles on from Haweswater Hotel. Typically this free parking can reach capacity by 9:30 in good weather, so an early start is always to be recommended. Three pay and display car parks within the village, with only modest free parking, opposite White Bridge Forge and the long lay-by beside the A591 north of the old Swan Hotel junction. Hats off to Helm Crag. The Calf Crag/Helm Crag ridge is more often followed eastwards so there’ll be many encounters with fellow fellwanderers. Some will be tackling the Co...Opposit...

Windermere, Summer 1946. I have always loved walking! I have an old photograph of me aged 16 months with my sister, Margaret, helping me to walk in Windermere! She has often said since that if she had known what this would lead to she would have dropped me in the water! I have intended to do a walks page for the website for sometime but have hardly known where to start or what to include/ leave out! However I will try to give a flavour of the walking opportunities. News, Exhibitions, Test Dates. One Week to go. The countdown begins. We are now on the countdown to starting the Coast To Coast. Accommodation is booked, the route sort of planned, and kit list bought. I am now in the throngs of fund raising for Calvert Kielder. I have pledged to raise 11,000 so that they can buy a terrain hopper. I have had wonderful support so far with people donating to my justgiving page. I have got some wonderful friends and family that have already helped me to raise some money.
