Building a reflective practice. Interaction design / thesis. To create a primer experience that presents making as a mindful and reflective practice to technically rationally minded individuals (ie engineers, scientists etc.) entering into design. Make and Articulate is an iPad productivity tool aimed for the early stages of making in design. It focuses on process over outcome and helps the participant build a personal engagement with making in the safe environment of an app.

Create a design intervention that utilizes ubiquitous computing technology to help enhance the experience of a place. The place we chose was the Carnegie Library of Oakland. Enlighten makes locating a book in the library as easy as following a string of lights. It utilizes RFID technology embedded in library cards, books, and RFID readers installed in bookshelves to offer a dynamic string of LED lights that guide a patron to the location of library book.

Interaction design / Service design. As part of the 48 hours Global Service Design Jam, the aim was to design around the theme hidden treasures. We focused on serving people with health related dietary restrictions (gluten allergies, diabetes, etc.) and “revealing hidden food treasures.”. Piki Eaters provides a list of enjoyable menu items at restaurants that fulfills theirr dietary needs, whether medically or self-imposed.

Visualizing a transition | Designs by Mark

The objective was to create a visualization of the path I took while transitioning between different disciplines. (electrical engineering and interaction design). The final map focused on making (or doing) as a map of insights that grew upon each other as transitioned from engineering to designerly sensibilities. The main transition in Transition Design is that of mindsets. It requires trusting the process over outcome. Visualizing the transition offers an opportunity for mindful reflections.
