Marks Woodworking: June 2010

http://markswoodworking.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 14, 2010. Laundry Room Upgrade - Part 3. Once the subfloor preparation was complete, it was time to get the tiling done. I don't have much experience tiling, and the tiling that I have done has been pretty frustrating, but I had high hopes for this job. After spending a lot of time getting the subfloor nice and flat I figured that this job would go smoothly. Here's the completed floor. I still need to make up a crawlspace cover. Friday, June 11, 2010. Laundry Room Upgrade - Part 2. After I f...

Marks Woodworking: November 2009

http://markswoodworking.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Friday, November 27, 2009. Kitchen Table - Part 1 - Legs and Apron. After finishing off the Craftsman Ottoman, I wanted to do another 'quick' project before starting on Lauren's bed. I chose to replace our $50 kitchen table that we bought when we first got married with a bigger version of the kids table. I build for Joshua earlier this year. It'll be a simple solid red oak top, walnut apron and red oak legs. To flatten the boards before cutting the mitres on the tablesaw. To cut the mortise I slide the l...

Marks Woodworking: August 2011

http://markswoodworking.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Monday, August 29, 2011. Welland Half Iron Triathlon - June 26th, 2011. First HIM, finish - 4:47:59.4, 34th OA, 8/38 AG. Average swim (for me). I started with Endurance Nation in the November OS, having run marathons for the past 7 years but not doing much biking or running during that time. I've done a few sprint triathlons over the years for fun, but this was my first time training specifically for a triathlon. The Welland HIM on June 26th was my first 'A' race of the year. Welland Ontario is 30 minute...

Marks Woodworking: December 2009

http://markswoodworking.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Monday, December 21, 2009. Kitchen Table - Part 3 - Finishing. This project is a big brother to the kids table. I built for Joshua and Lauren earlier this year, so the finishing schedule is the same. After sanding all the parts 120-150-220 with a random orbital sander, I took them upstairs to my 'finishing room'. I finished the table with two coats of Watco Danish Oil - Natural, following the directions on the can. I use scraps of an old t-shirt to apply the oil and wipe off the excess. I first glued up ...

Marks Woodworking: January 2010

http://markswoodworking.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 26, 2010. Lauren's Bed - Part 6 - Final Assembly. We let the completed bed air out for a week in the house before moving it into Lauren's room. Both Joshua and Lauren gave me a hand assembling the bed. Once the bed was assembled, Rosemary gave me a hand moving the mattress into place, then made up Lauren's big girl bed for the first time! Rosemary found a good deal on a polar bear comforter to keep Lauren warm. Lauren loves sleeping in her big girl bed! One other improvement that I'll pr...

Craftsman Mailbox - Mark's Woodworking

http://www.markswoodworking.ca/projects/craftsman-mailbox

Compressor Drain Valve Replacement. While staining the front of the house I realized how cheap our current mailbox looked and decided to build a new one. I Googled around on the Internet awhile and found a picture of a Craftsman Mailbox and got to work in Sketchup designing a plan to build my own. You can download my Craftsman Mailbox plan at the bottom of this page. The back of the mailbox is 9 1/2" in height so I had to do a glue-up to get a piece that wide. I used the horizontal rails with the dados t...

Morris Chair - Mark's Woodworking

http://www.markswoodworking.ca/projects/morris-chair

Compressor Drain Valve Replacement. I was looking on the Internet for a plan for a Morris Chair and stumbled upon the Woodsmith website where I found the previous month's issue had a Morris Chair plan in it. Our local bookstore only had the current issue but I was able to find a copy of the previous month with the Morris Chair (Issue #155) at a local lumberyard. On the Woodsmith website that had an ' online extra. For $10 at the plansnow website. Save Money by Building Your Own Furniture. The chair requi...

Magazine Rack - Mark's Woodworking

http://www.markswoodworking.ca/projects/magazine-rack

Compressor Drain Valve Replacement. Harry and the Magazine Rack. The magazine rack was the second oak project that I completed. It was the first thing I built without using someone else's plan. I spent some time looking for a suitable plan but not finding any decided to sketch a plan on my own. Using scrap paper printouts from work I drew and redrew the different parts until I was happy with the look. I based the initial work on this magazine rack. Cutting mortises in legs. You can download my Magazine R...

Subfloor Removal - Mark's Woodworking

http://www.markswoodworking.ca/articles-1/subfloor-removal

Compressor Drain Valve Replacement. Lauren assists with tile removal. After removing the ceramic tile from the kitchen floor using an air hammer, I was left with 300 square feet of flooring covered in thinset. Since we wanted to put down hardwood, there was no way we could leave the floor in that rough shape. The thinset had to be removed. After a few quick Google searches for 'remove thinset from plywood'. I headed over to Breaktime Classic. Removing thinset from plywood. Removing plywood from plywood.

Railroad Clock - Mark's Woodworking

http://www.markswoodworking.ca/projects/railroad-clock

Compressor Drain Valve Replacement. In December 2007, I put in a big order to Lee Valley. I got some parts for a bunk bed I was building for Joshua, hooks for a coat rack, slides for an outfeed table in my workshop and other bits and pieces. On a bit of a whim I also got a Railroad Clock Kit and Plan. The price has gone up since I ordered it, but for $96 I got a full size plan and all the hardware needed to build a nice clock. The instructions say to use a pneumatic stapler to install the glass. I ha...

Coffee Table - Mark's Woodworking

http://www.markswoodworking.ca/projects/coffee-table

Compressor Drain Valve Replacement. After getting my first tablesaw and other assorted tools and setting up my workshop, I first built things for other people. A couple of pine step stools and a Herb Box. Were my first projects. I was happy with how they turned out, but it was time to build something to keep in our house. Tabletop, Shelf and Leg Glue-ups. Cutting My First Mortises. One last mortise to cut in the rails - a 3/8" mortise along the bottom of the bottom rail to accept the 1/2" shelf. I us...

Lauren's Bed - Mark's Woodworking

http://www.markswoodworking.ca/projects/lauren-s-bed

Compressor Drain Valve Replacement. Foot board post glue-up. I started by making up a plan in Sketchup - you can find that at the bottom of the page. Once that was done I called my wood guy and ordered up 100bf of kiln-dried curly maple. We wanted a lighter colour wood than the Oak I normally work with and he had a good deal on curly maple so that's what we went with. Just like with the wide panels there was plenty of tear-out with these boards and after the planer I had to spend quite a bit of time runn...

Workshop - Mark's Woodworking

http://www.markswoodworking.ca/workshop

Compressor Drain Valve Replacement. My first workshop was a room in the basement of our first home. Though it was very convenient to be able to walk down the stairs and do some work, getting material up and down the stairs was aggravating to say the least. The room was also narrow and had a low ceiling which made it awkward to work in. Above you can see what my workshop looks like in Sketchup. You can see the original Sketchup file in the 3D warehouse here.

A blog to show my latest woodworking and home renovation projects. Some running posts may be snuck in as well. Wednesday, November 16, 2016. Doorbell Cover #3 - Finishing. My last few projects have just been finished with Watco Danish Oil. This one I wanted to try and get a bit more of a match to old Craftsman furniture, as that is the next big project I have.
