Second photo was when she paused, so don’t think it was a menacing look…. 2015, August 9th: Kestrel box update. August 10, 2015. In the 5 hours I was there she brought in two birds (minus feathers and head) and three insects, this one below which looks like a grasshopper without its wings. Plenty of them in the grasses. All photos today were with the AF-S 80-200 f2.8 on my D7100 Nikon body. The photos were taken from a blind 20 feet from the power pole, and the nest box is mounted 15 feet off the ground. Monthly Archives: July 2015. 2015, July 19th: Coopers Hawk chicks have fledged. July 20, 2015. The new nest is just 100 feet from the 2012 one, and just as fragile looking as the last. I cannot see this small nest working for these birds: it looks to be a few sticks tossed in the notch of a 12″ diameter x 70 ft tall pine tree. Here’s the photo he sent me of the pair (#V33 and #A20) that were locked together when they dropped out of the sky onto Madison Avenue in Pittsfield, MA in March of 2011 as mentioned above. Can’t say I would have enjoyed untangling them. Months ago the owner Tom and I installed a Kestrel box on a knoll in a field near his house, and every time I go there I look to see if anything other than a Kestrel might use this as a perch. Today was the day. Going into the property I saw nothing, but as I prepared to drive out at dusk (5pm) I noticed something large perched on the box: a barred owl! 2015, January 25th: Porcupine, South Mountain, Pittsfield MA.
