Marmot Mail

Thursday, January 16, 2014. Do you know what the origin of that phrase is? It's to literally be caught with blood on your hands. Right after you committed the crime, right after you've wronged someone. This week I've seen two examples of this. Each awful in it's own way. Each making me want to turn my head and look elsewhere. Problem is, they are happening to people I know. How do you deal with it when you are caught doing something you shouldn't have done? But, would that really be true? What would I ha...

Marmot Mail: O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree

http://www.marmotmail.blogspot.com/2013/12/o-christmas-tree-o-christmas-tree.html

Saturday, December 21, 2013. O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree. I'm not gonna sugar-coat this, I've had a bad morning. After moping around, I found myself sitting at the bottom of the Christmas tree in the family room with the family dog. The joke at our house, is that if there were a fire or other natural disaster, we should run to save the photo albums and the Christmas ornaments. There is really nothing else in our home that has much sentimental, (or monatary! It's also a picture of faithfulness.

Marmot Mail: A Sad Relief

http://www.marmotmail.blogspot.com/2013/11/a-sad-relief.html

Saturday, November 16, 2013. The other day, a friend of mine described the death of my mother as: "a sad relief." I'm liking that phrase more and more. It captures the mixture of feelings you experience after someone has had a long and difficult illness. Sad, for obvious reasons. A relief, because this long, long trip is finally over. Lately, I've been working out the business of "returning to normal." Or, better said, moving to a new normal of sorts. Will I go out and get a job? View my complete profile.

Marmot Mail: Still a little room on the list

http://www.marmotmail.blogspot.com/2013/12/still-little-room-on-list.html

Sunday, December 22, 2013. Still a little room on the list. Christmas at our house starts on Christmas Eve. There's usually some kind of church; the tradition-steeped formal dinner of strawberry waffles with whipped cream; and one present each before we wander off to bed - or, to some last minute wrapping. All this has caused me to think about who I honor at Christmas with presents and cards. Would you believe, I have discovered a lot more people in the latter two catagories than in the former two? Or ou...

Marmot Mail: Figuring it Out

http://www.marmotmail.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-business-of-dying.html

Thursday, October 31, 2013. She thought she had it all figured out. I don't know how many times she told me: "When I die, all my paperwork is in the desk. Everything you need. It's all taken care of.". Her desk was neat as a pin. There, she had her bank account number and the numbers of her attorney and her accountant. She also had a lot of other papers she thought we might need. And, be sure to go look in my safety deposit box," she always said. But, nothing happened to her like she thought. I asked one...

Marmot Mail: October Days

http://www.marmotmail.blogspot.com/2013/10/dark-days.html

Thursday, October 24, 2013. These are some of the most beautiful days of the year in the town where I live. Temperatures slip-sliding around in the 70's. Leaves of every color imaginable decorating the trees. When I was a kid, we used to call this the Indian Summer- probably all kinds of violations of politically correctness in that name now. So, it amazes me that these idyllic, golden days should be colored by sadness everywhere I turn. Where is your God now? Why don't you just curse God and die? I beli...

Llama Momma: awkward silence

http://llamamomma.blogspot.com/2011/11/awkward-silence.html

Thursday, November 10, 2011. I’ve been quiet for so long on this blog, it feels strange to say anything at all. Hey It’s me. I’m still alive over here, busily raising three boys and wearing any number of other hats: writer, friend, editor, wife, mother, cook, housekeeper. Should I keep going? But you’re busy too, no doubt. Everyone I meet seems to have a couple of lives going. I’ve been thinking about this space and how I want to fill it, or even, if I should. November 10, 2011 at 3:16:00 PM GMT-4. And, ...

Llama Momma: March 2012

http://llamamomma.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 7, 2012. I pile the stack of books on the counter with a thud and smile at the librarian as I hand her my library card. 8220;No kids today? 8221; She asks. 8220;No. Just me.” I say. 8220;Now, I have to ask you,” she says, in her rich European accent, “you have the three little boys, yes? 8220;Yes.” I won’t pass this comment on to the noisy boys, who are ten and would take great offense at being called little. 8220;My dear,” she asks as she scans Wednesday Wars. How do I have time to read?

Llama Momma: May 2010

http://llamamomma.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Friday, May 28, 2010. Today is our first day of summer vacation, and my boys would rather be in school. They don’t want a break. They want to keep going. Even the promise of science summer camps and unlimited books at the library isn’t enough to persuade them. They’d just rather be in school. We’ll balance all this fun out with chores and math facts, but mostly, we’ll hang out at the pool. That’s just the way I roll. Do you savor summer break with your kids? Will my house be loud? Llama Momma: in honor of Thanksgiving

http://llamamomma.blogspot.com/2011/11/in-honor-of-thanksgiving.html

Thursday, November 17, 2011. In honor of Thanksgiving. A couple of years ago, when the Kindergartner was a preschooler, he started asking questions about Thanksgiving. No doubt, they were talking about the holiday at preschool, and he wondered how we planned to celebrate. Will we get a turkey? Yes" I told him. Of course," I said. We got to the meat department, and I said, "Okay, buddy! It's finally time to pick our turkey! He looked at the mound of frozen turkeys and exclaimed, "But, Mom! Saw it coming t...

Llama Momma: January 2011

http://llamamomma.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Monday, January 24, 2011. Last summer, her world fell apart. One of my dear friends got up one day like every other day, and by the end of it, her life was crumbled up around her. So we did what we have done for years, my friend and I. We headed to Chilis for nachos and a heart-to-heart. But when we got there, the nachos were gone. Off the menu. Replaced with “new and improved” nachos. Only they were not improved. Just different. Links to this post. Labels: Cooking and Food. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Llama Momma: March 2010

http://llamamomma.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 30, 2010. Epi pens and intution. I joined the club today. The “Mom’s-who-carry-epi-pens-in-case-their-child-has-a-severe-allergic-reaction” club. Not as fun as bunko. Twin B. was hanging out with his grandma and grandpa when he started having an allergic reaction, presumably to a guinea pig they were babysitting. But while I was sitting at a stoplight, still waiting for the nurse to call me back, I looked in the rearview mirror and B’s eyes had swollen shut. Trust your instincts, mom.

Llama Momma: giving things up for lint

http://llamamomma.blogspot.com/2011/04/giving-things-up-for-lint.html

Tuesday, April 5, 2011. Giving things up for lint. Did you ask your friend what he might like for his birthday? I ask Twin A. as he munches a bagel after soccer practice. Yes I think he'd really like some new football cards." He says. Doesn't he have a pretty big collection already? Well, yeah. But he said he had to give them up for lint.". April 5, 2011 at 1:39:00 PM GMT-4. This is the best Lent post Ive read all season! April 5, 2011 at 6:39:00 PM GMT-4. April 6, 2011 at 9:10:00 AM GMT-4. Im looking fo...

Llama Momma: June 2010

Tuesday, June 29, 2010. It’s that time of year again. Time for me to plug the Writing Academy and encourage you to check out their retreat for writers. Coming up in August. (You can choose from two tracks: the first runs from Thursday, July 29 until Monday, August 2; the second is Friday, July 30 through Sunday, August 1.) Located at the Mt. Olivet retreat center in Minnesota, you won’t find a more beautiful place to hone your craft. I cannot say enough about this writing group. Truly. I should add that ...

Sunday, February 13, 2011. So I say to my daughters, "Come see these ideas I've found for making Valentines for this year," as I gather them around the computer. They hem and they haw. They wander off. A couple of days later I ask E if she has decided which kind of Valentine she wants to make. "Well, Mommy, I'd like to do something you didn't. And what, dear readers, is "it"? Yes, my sweet daughter is giving out venomous snakes for Valentines. I think they're brilliant. Are you feeling the love? 10 No ma...
