Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy. Mars, the planet. Mars is much smaller than Earth and has no deep oceans, lakes or rivers. Unlike our blue sky, the atmosphere of Mars is red-tinged, with pink and reddish brown shades. Powerful wind storms blast fine dust along the desert-like surface causing these discolorations. These storms can persist for weeks, causing our view of the planet’s surface to be blotted out, but also creating spectacular colour changes.

Dieser Planet ist auf Grund seiner orangeroten Farbe nach dem römischen Kriegsgott Mars benannt und seine beiden Monde heißen Furcht und Schrecken (Phobos und Deimos). Die Farbe kommt durch Eisenoxid-Staub (Rost), welcher sich auf der Planeten-Oberfläche und in der Atmosphäre befindet. So wird auch in Zukunft die Ein oder Andere Forschungsmission auf dem Mars landen.
