Our Kitchen Remodel: December 2009
http://marshallkitchen.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
This is a daily diary of activities we experienced in remodeling our kitchen, from total demolition to rebuild. Thursday, December 31, 2009. 12/30/09 - Day 54 - NEW LIGHTS! Greg added another set of sockets and hooked my under-cabinet lights to a new switch that also controlled the new pendant lights over the peninsula. What a romantic glow. This setting will be perfect or watching TV. Just enough light to get water from the refrigerator. This is what all three zones on look like. I purposely painted the...
Our Kitchen Remodel: 1/15/10 - Day 71 - Making Clay Strips
http://marshallkitchen.blogspot.com/2010/01/day-71-11510-making-clay-strips.html
This is a daily diary of activities we experienced in remodeling our kitchen, from total demolition to rebuild. Friday, January 15, 2010. 1/15/10 - Day 71 - Making Clay Strips. All of the 2"x2" tiles were in place and I cut up some tiles to fit around the electrical sockets. But there were still 124" of blank 1/2" spaces at the edges of the colorful tiles and the adjacent cabinets and about 74" of 1" blank spaces under the cabinets and microwave oven. Here, the dried strips are moved from the cookie shee...
Our Kitchen Remodel: 1/10/10 - Day 66 - All Tiles In Place!
http://marshallkitchen.blogspot.com/2010/01/day-66-11010-all-tiles-in-place.html
This is a daily diary of activities we experienced in remodeling our kitchen, from total demolition to rebuild. Friday, January 15, 2010. 1/10/10 - Day 66 - All Tiles In Place! Now for the last wall! I laid out the pattern onto the countertop, then troweled on the thin-set morter in swirls on the wall. Putting the tiles on, one by one. Almost finished with the 2x2" tiles. I may cut some tiles diagonally to form a curved line from below the cabinet to the edge of the countertop. Success around the sockets.

Our Kitchen Remodel: November 2009
http://marshallkitchen.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
This is a daily diary of activities we experienced in remodeling our kitchen, from total demolition to rebuild. Sunday, November 22, 2009. My Kitchen Remodel Inspired by Mom. The updated house was very beautiful, but I was sad because mom was unable to experience these great changes while she was alive. One day in November 2007, I had a "fix-it" bee in my bonnet and impulsively got some of my many paint cans and started painting the kitchen cabinets. There was no plan except to try different colors, ...

Our Shower Remodel: MY SHOWER DOOR BROKE! . . . . DIY TO THE RESCUE?
http://kanikamarshallshowerremodel.blogspot.com/2011/04/my-shower-door-broke-diy-to-rescue.html
Friday, April 15, 2011. MY SHOWER DOOR BROKE! DIY TO THE RESCUE? So I'm taking a shower the other day, but when I tried to step out of the shower, the glass door split apart from the frame, thus wedging me inside the shower. Help! Had my partner not been there to open the door from the outside, I would have had to open a can of whoop-a on my shower door just to get out! I did not want to touch that door ever again! So what was I going to do? Go to work and deal with the problem later. But my space is too...

Our Shower Remodel: INTREPID OR CRAZY?
http://kanikamarshallshowerremodel.blogspot.com/2011/04/intrepid-or-crazy.html
Saturday, April 30, 2011. After finally putting together my wet saw after it sat for a couple of years in my garage, I was able to finish tiling the step into the shower. While not wholly satisfied with it because some of the edges did not line up as perfectly as I would have liked, it was pretty much done. Trowel time. I troweled about 15"x13" swaths and pressed and tapped the clay and glass tiles in place. I was pretty much done with the side wall by 10 AM! Time to tackle the big wall. Next was adding ...

Our Shower Remodel: GROUT, GROUTING, GROUTED
http://kanikamarshallshowerremodel.blogspot.com/2011/04/grout-grouting-grouted.html
Saturday, April 30, 2011. GROUT, GROUTING, GROUTED. This continues the saga of our shower remodel with mosaic tiles and glass. I pulled myself out of bed at 8 AM, after almost 7 hours of sleep from tiling until late last night. A quick trip to Home Depot to get some "Sahara" tan-colored grout and I was ready. Check Bowl for mixing the water with grout? Check Tarp the cover the work area? Check Right shoulder ready for several more hours of straining it? I did it this way because the grout had been a litt...

Our Shower Remodel: TOO GARISH? TOO BORING?
http://kanikamarshallshowerremodel.blogspot.com/2011/04/too-garish-too-boring.html
Thursday, April 28, 2011. So the step was ready for tile, but what colors should cover the tile? I had made so many cool tiles that I initially thought I should use 'em, even though most of my recent tile efforts had exploded all over the kiln:. I quickly came up with this layout:. How horrible is that? Maybe just white tiles for the step since the walls are going to be so colorful (this white fabric approximates all white tile):. How about a mixture of white and colored tiles? MY SHOWER DOOR BROKE!

Our Shower Remodel: THE KILN PRODUCED GIFTS
http://kanikamarshallshowerremodel.blogspot.com/2011/04/kiln-produced-gifts.html
Saturday, April 16, 2011. THE KILN PRODUCED GIFTS. As soon as I woke up I rushed outside to the kiln and lifted the lid to see what my new bathroom tiles looked like after being fired all night long. STILL TOO HOT! So I propped the lid open a crack for an hour to cool then came back. The colors were all washed out! Too much heat had burned away the reds and oranges of the 3"x6" tiles that I had so carefully painted yesterday! I'll probably not retouch any of these tiles after all. The next batch of t...

Our Shower Remodel: A PROPER JOB
http://kanikamarshallshowerremodel.blogspot.com/2011/04/proper-job.html
Saturday, April 30, 2011. I need to cut some tiles better than with my manual method. So I looked carefully in the garage until I found the wet tile saw that I bought a couple of years ago, but never opened. Yesterday morning, I looked through the instructions, as I was listening to the coverage of Prince William's wedding on TV. Several parts to put together somehow. So as usual, I did my best to put it together, added water to the tray (how much? I turned the wet saw 90 degrees in the tub so the water ...

Our Kitchen Remodel
This is a daily diary of activities we experienced in remodeling our kitchen, from total demolition to rebuild. Saturday, February 6, 2010. 2/6/10 - Good Headway. By 2:30 this morning (Saturday), I nearly finished some of the little tasks that I had set for myself yesterday morning . . . and then some. It took a lot longer than anticipated, but I went to bed with satisfaction for the hard work exercised. Lay the Last Floor Board. Replace the Dining Room Light. It must have rolled under the refrigerator, ...
