Notes from a Red Planet: June 2008

http://marsroverdriver.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Notes from a Red Planet. Saturday, June 7, 2008. Lord of the Flies. I wasn't at the absolute bottom of the social ladder when I was in middle school, but I was close. The kid at the bottom, just a rung or two below me, was named Paul Rooney. Paul was a lanky, goofy-looking kid, with dark curly hair and a complete inability to successfully resist the horrors inflicted on him daily by his monstrous peers. They're not here for me! They're only here to play my video games! If you want to know.) I imagine...

Notes from a Red Planet: You're Damn Right I Will, Takahashi-sensei

http://marsroverdriver.blogspot.com/2008/08/youre-damn-right-i-will-takahashi.html

Notes from a Red Planet. Sunday, August 3, 2008. You're Damn Right I Will, Takahashi-sensei. Francis Takahashi-sensei is the chief instructor at my aikido dojo. Ways - to continue to lead and teach, and to practice and develop his own art. Thanks to his example, I've always come back to aikido despite my own injuries. If Francis can do it, I can do it. Did you forget something? So," I continued, "just in case I get hit by a bus tomorrow, I wanted to say thank you.". You're always welcome," he said. "...

Notes from a Red Planet: I Still Want to Smack Him, Thirty Years Later

http://marsroverdriver.blogspot.com/2008/06/i-still-want-to-smack-him-thirty-years_01.html

Notes from a Red Planet. Sunday, June 1, 2008. I Still Want to Smack Him, Thirty Years Later. I was six when Star Wars. Came out - the perfect age, I think. I don't remember much about my childhood, but I'll always remember watching that movie for the first time: from the opening shot of the enormous Star Destroyer bearing down mercilessly on the valiant but hopelessly outgunned little rebel ship, through leaving the theater jumping-up-and-down excited. That excited. I wanted to be. The anticipation buil...

Notes from a Red Planet: January 2009

http://marsroverdriver.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Notes from a Red Planet. Monday, January 26, 2009. Ray Bradbury, Part 2. Sorry, I don't have any pictures yet. I'll add them, eventually, if I ever get copies.]. Thursday, January 15, 2009, was the official JPL celebration of the MER rovers' fifth anniversary - five years into our three-month mission, and still counting. They had a very nice televised event in von Karman auditorium, with tribute videos and with former CNN science correspondent Miles O'Brien as the keynote speaker. This is a full-scale mo...

Notes from a Red Planet: April 2007

http://marsroverdriver.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html

Notes from a Red Planet. Monday, April 16, 2007. CLAUDIUS: 'Tis sweet and commendable in your nature, Hamlet,. To give these mourning duties to your father:. But, you must know, your father lost a father;. That father lost, lost his, and the survivor bound. In filial obligation for some term. To do obsequious sorrow: but to persever. In obstinate condolement is a course. Of impious stubbornness . I must have read or seen Hamlet. Don't you know this isn't how you play the game? Friday, April 13, 2007.

Mars and Me: 2011-10

http://marsandme.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

The unofficial diary of a Mars rover driver, five years delayed. Opportunity Sol 961 (Spirit Sol 982). Eventually, we end up with a two-pronged strategy. Prong one is to choose a target in the shadowed area, despite the poor range data there. Prong two is to cross our fingers. Wow I see why the science team wants to stay here a while. So much to see! Mars and Me: Spirit Sol 1136

http://marsandme.blogspot.com/2012/03/spirit-sol-1136.html

The unofficial diary of a Mars rover driver, five years delayed. Let's see, we're back on Spirit now, so we're driving around . oh, yeah, Home Plate! Or, rather, Mitcheltree Ridge, where the science team thinks outliers of Home Plate material are to be found. Today Terry and I are driving her over there. It's just an educated guess, but sometimes that's all you have. So we argue a bunch, make some tweaks to the sequence, cross our fingers, and send the sequence to Mars. Next post: sol 1141, March 20.].

Mars and Me: Spirit Sol 1144

http://marsandme.blogspot.com/2012/03/spirit-sol-1144.html

The unofficial diary of a Mars rover driver, five years delayed. I like Torquas, mainly because for some reason it's easy to create catchy sequence names incorporating it. "Tool Change on Torquas" is today's sequence - sounds like it oughta be an Edgar Rice Borroughs short story. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Opportunity Sol 1131 (Spirit Sol 1152). Mars and Me: Opportunity Sol 1105 (Spirit Sol 1125)

http://marsandme.blogspot.com/2012/03/opportunity-sol-1105-spirit-sol-1125.html

The unofficial diary of a Mars rover driver, five years delayed. Opportunity Sol 1105 (Spirit Sol 1125). It's a straightforward day in the Land of Opportunity as we bump all of about 8m to the rim of Cabo Corrientes, setting ourselves up to take the first eye of our long-baseline stereo image here. It's kind of a yawner, as these things go, since I have a shadow (Tara) doing all the real work. I kinda miss the days when I actually got to drive the damn rover once in a while. Work with me, here. At night,...

Mars and Me: Opportunity Sol 1136 (Spirit Sol 1157)

http://marsandme.blogspot.com/2012/04/opportunity-sol-1136-spirit-sol-1157.html

The unofficial diary of a Mars rover driver, five years delayed. Opportunity Sol 1136 (Spirit Sol 1157). We come in all hot to drive to the dark streak east of us - and are sorely disappointed. We had a joint-1 stall in the IDD sequence yesterday. So today turns into a less exciting one; we just have to redo most of yesterday's sequence. But at least it's easy, and it's OK to have an easy one now and then. Sharon makes time to shadow part of the day again, and delivers her first sequence ever!

Mars and Me: Opportunity Sol 1107 (Spirit Sol 1128)

http://marsandme.blogspot.com/2012/03/opportunity-sol-1107-spirit-sol-1128.html

The unofficial diary of a Mars rover driver, five years delayed. Opportunity Sol 1107 (Spirit Sol 1128). But we like erring on the side of caution, and anyway driving backward is natural thisol: the turn is shorter in that direction, and counterclockwise (and hence won't scoop material into the RF wheel) to boot. The only thing that could make today better would be if Frank were back from paternity leave. And he is! Next post: sol 1136, March 15.]. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Notes from a Red Pla...

Mars and Me: 2012-01

http://marsandme.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

The unofficial diary of a Mars rover driver, five years delayed. Opportunity Sol 1074 (Spirit Sol 1094). No driving is planned today. But yesterday's drive stopped a bit earlier than we'd hoped, after covering 2.19m of the planned 2.5m, due to increasing tilt. We knew the tilt limit was tight, but we allow only 8deg of tilt this close to the rim, and our limit of 7.8deg was about as high as we'll go. Next post: sol 1096 (Opportunity sol 1075), February 1.]. Links to this post. I have good news and bad ne...

http://marsandme.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

The unofficial diary of a Mars rover driver, five years delayed. Captain's Log, Supplemental: A Final Word. So that's it - that's where my life got too complicated to continue transcribing what happened each day on MER. It's been a blast to revisit MER's early days - it all flows by so fast when it's happening, and it's been a treat to get to live it all over again. And of course I'll continue spouting off from time to time at my Twitter. Links to this post. Opportunity Sol 1138 (Spirit Sol 1158). Accord...

Mars and Me: 2011-09

http://marsandme.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

The unofficial diary of a Mars rover driver, five years delayed. Opportunity Sol 943 (Spirit Sol 964). Since I can hardly focus anyway, it's a good thing today's drive is a simple one. We plan 57m, dead at Victoria Crater, stopping midway to image a smaller crater called Kitty Clyde's Sister. This drive cuts our distance to Victoria roughly in half: we should be about 51m away when we're done. Next post: sol 978 (Opportunity sol 957), October 3.]. Links to this post.
