Priene, Miletus, Didyma. Rome I – Ostia Antica. Turkey – Istanbul. February 16, 2014. Despite a near sleepless night, we were up early and raring to go. After force feeding ourselves at the buffet breakfast, we hit the road. The weather was lovely. There was just a hint of chill in the air but a light jacket was good enough. I just love that early winter weather when it’s cold if you stand in the shade but nice and warm when you’re under the sun. Roman woman (possibly Cornelia). The last highlight of the...

Priene, Miletus, Didyma. Rome I – Ostia Antica. December 31, 2015. The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for this blog. Priene, Miletus, Didyma. Rome I – Ostia Antica. Turkey (part 7) – Pergamon. June 1, 2014. The plan for today was to visit Pergamon (or Pergamum). A couple of days ago we had booked a guided tour through our hotel. I’m not a big fan of guided tours and this was the first time I was going on one. But Pergamon was pretty far from Selcuk and we didn’t feel like figuring out how to get there. Cable car up to the acropolis. How’s that for an inheritance. Looking off the edge of the acropolis. Anyway, back to t...

Priene, Miletus, Didyma. Rome I – Ostia Antica. Turkey – Istanbul. February 5, 2014. I’d always wanted to go to Turkey and nearly talked my buddy (and often travel partner) Greg into going to Turkey instead of Italy in 2011. Thankfully, he resisted because Italy was AMAZING (more on that later at some point). But I was convinced that Turkey had to be my second stop in Europe and 2013 was the year for it. Before turning in for the night, we went to have a quick look at the Blue Mosque and Aya Sofia. T...

Priene, Miletus, Didyma. Rome I – Ostia Antica. Turkey – Istanbul. February 24, 2014. The plan for the second day was to see Dolmabahce Palace. This palace is closed on Monday so we had to make sure we saw it on Sunday. The guidebooks I consulted were pretty meh on Dolmabahce but my experience in Italy had been that sometimes the best experiences are ones not endorsed by guidebooks. So despite the lukewarm reviews, we headed for Dolmabahce. Century until the fall of the dynasty. The entrance to the palace.

Priene, Miletus, Didyma. Rome I – Ostia Antica. Turkey (part 8) – Priene, Miletus, Didyma. June 21, 2014. Today was Friday and our second last day in Selcuk. The plan was to see Priene, Miletus and Didyma – popularly known as PMD. We were once again going on a group tour despite the rather unimpressive experience the day before. The motivation again was to avoid having to figure out how to get to the sites. The view from up high at Priene. The city suffered the wrath of the Persians when they swept throu...

Priene, Miletus, Didyma. Rome I – Ostia Antica. Turkey (part 5) – Selcuk. May 11, 2014. As mentioned in the previous entry, Monday was our last full day in Istanbul. We were flying to Izmir on Tuesday and staying in Selcuk for the next 5 days. From Selcuk, the plan was to see the various ancient sites in the vicinity such as Ephesus, Priene, Miletus, Didyma, Pergamon and Aphrodisias if possible. So far, I was loving everything about Selcuk (except for the food as usual). Turkey – Istanbul. You are commen...

Priene, Miletus, Didyma. Rome I – Ostia Antica. Thank you, Misbah. March 8, 2015. This was meant to be a travel blog but I had to make an exception and write about Misbah now that he is on the verge of retirement. This piece was first published in The Nation here: Thank you, Misbah. After the golden age in terms of raw talent that was the 90s came the largely mediocre 2000s. The team seemed to do okay with mostly journeyman cricketers who tried hard. And then arrived Mohammed Asif and Mohammed Aa...Asif ...
