The Mary Man House Project. The Evolution of an Antebellum Home. That was most likely added by Mary and Archibald Taylor c. 1785. The lower porch is shown with Victorian banisters, steps, and curved pieces connecting the upper end of each column. It is unlikely Mrs. Read made any of these changes as she lived in Charleston. Just reading over Katherine Richardson’s report on the house and discovered that she has written that…. Her source is from the Charleston Deed Collection, vol. 2-F, p. 138. We’re going to have them send us a copy of the page to check what it actually says. But for now, it looks as though Mary Man built the house. That would give them a reason to make the east one 2 feet wider.
