Larry Masinter Musings: HTTP Status Cat: 418 - I'm a teapot
http://masinter.blogspot.com/2011/12/http-status-cat-418-i-teapot.html
Personal blog of Larry Masinter on mainly technical topics. December 14, 2011. HTTP Status Cat: 418 - Im a teapot. 418 - I'm a teapot. A photo by GirlieMac. In the W3C TAG. I'm working on bringing together a set of threads around the evolution of the web, the use of registries and extension points, and MIME in web standards. A delightful collection of HTTP Status Cats. Includes the above cat-in-teapot came from HTCPCP "The HyperText Coffee Pot Control Protocol" [RFC 2324]. Im a Principal Scientist at Ado...
Larry Masinter Musings: Ambiguity, Semantic web, speech acts, truth and beauty
http://masinter.blogspot.com/2014/11/ambiguity-semantic-web-speech-acts.html
Personal blog of Larry Masinter on mainly technical topics. November 20, 2014. Ambiguity, Semantic web, speech acts, truth and beauty. I think this post is pretty academic for the web dev crowd, oh well). When talking about URLs and URNs or semantic web or linked data, I keep on returning to a topic. Carl Hewitt gave me a paper about inconsistency which this post reacts to. The traditional AI model of semantics and meaning don't work well for the web. Now we get to the great and horrible debate over "wha...
Larry Masinter Musings: Forking Standards and Document Licensing
http://masinter.blogspot.com/2013/11/forking-standards-and-document-licensing.html
Personal blog of Larry Masinter on mainly technical topics. November 4, 2013. Forking Standards and Document Licensing. I thought I would post here a pointer to the Adobe Standards Blog on "Forking Standards and Document Licensing". That Dave McAllister and I wrote in reaction to some of the controversy around the document license issue in W3C. Amazingly, this doesn't seem to be as much of an issue in IETF. Larry Masinter Musings: Irreconcilable differences
http://masinter.blogspot.com/2011/06/irreconcilable-differences.html
Personal blog of Larry Masinter on mainly technical topics. June 26, 2011. I've been meaning to post some version of this forever, and it's been getting in the way of me blogging more. So . here goes. incomplete and warty as this post is. I've come to think that many of these differences might be from a "implementation" vs. "specification" view, but I'll have to say more about that later. The ongoing battle for future control over HTML is dominated not only by the usual forces ("whose technology wins?
Larry Masinter Musings: Standardizing JSON
http://masinter.blogspot.com/2013/03/standardizing-json_25.html
Personal blog of Larry Masinter on mainly technical topics. March 25, 2013. Update 4/2/2013: in an email. To the IETF JSON mailing list. Barry Leiba (Applications Area director in IETF) noted that discussions had started with ECMA and ECMA TC 39 to reach agreement on where JSON will be standardized, before continuing with the chartering of an IETF working group. JSON was originally specified by Doug Crockford in RFC 4627. To update RFC 4627. The JavaScript language itself is standardized by a different c...

Mukul Gandhi: May 2013

Sunday, May 19, 2013. Thanks to OxygenXML folks. On behalf of Xerces-J. XML Schema team, I would like to thank folks from Oxygen XML. Team to highlight many important bugs within Xerces-J XSD 1.1 validator. We've been able to solve many of those reported bugs, and I feel this has made implementation of Xerces-J XSD 1.1 validator quite better. Here's the list of issues reported by Oxygen folks during the past 1-2 years I guess, which are either resolved or closed:. Links to this post. Messages in a bottle.
Mukul Gandhi: July 2011
http://mukulgandhi.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Tuesday, July 26, 2011. Revisiting] Xerces-J XSModel serializer. I started playing a bit with Xerces-J. XSSerializer utility (it's actually a sample within Xerces-J and was introduced in Xerces-J 2.10.0 - the version in SVN is slightly better and will be released with a future Xerces release; and it serializes an in-memory Xerces XSModel instance into a lexical XSD. Syntax), and thought of writing something about it's features. And the XSModel serializer echoed this element instance (the XSModel serializ...
Mukul Gandhi: XSD 1.1 is now a W3C standard
http://mukulgandhi.blogspot.com/2012/04/xsd-11-is-now-w3c-standard.html
Saturday, April 14, 2012. XSD 11 is now a W3C standard. I've been looking forward (and I hope many others as well) to have the XSD. 11 language to become a W3C recommendation (REC). XSD 1.1 did become a REC on 5th April 2012. This was a big big wait for the XSD community! But finally this has come so. The previous XSD standard (XSD 1.0 2nd edition) dates back to 2004. XSD 11 Structures specification: http:/ www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema11-1/#changes. Thanks for this interesting post! Do you konw if Xerces-C 3&...

Mukul Gandhi: XSD 1.1 assertions with complexType extensions
http://mukulgandhi.blogspot.com/2012/07/xsd-11-assertions-with-complextype.html
Sunday, July 22, 2012. XSD 11 assertions with complexType extensions. I thought, it would be good to write this post here and sharing with XML Schema. There was an interesting debate on xmlschema-dev. List recently, where we argued that what is the benefit of specifying an XSD 1.1 assertion within a XSD complexType that is derived from another complexType via an extension. XSD Schema document (XS1):. Xs:schema xmlns:xs="http:/ www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xs:element name="X" xs:complexType xs:compl...1) An...
Mukul Gandhi: February 2012
http://mukulgandhi.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, February 25, 2012. Modular XML instances and modular XSD schemas. I was playing with some new ideas lately related to exploring design options, to construct modular XML instance documents vs/and modular XSD. Schema documents and thought to write my findings as a blog post here. I believe, there are primarily following concepts related to constructing modular XML documents (and XSD schemas) when XSD validation is involved:. 1 Modularize XML documents using the XInclude construct. I essentially d...

Tuesday, August 23, 2011. XPath 2.0 and XSD schemas : sharing experiences. I was just playing with XPath 2.0. And thought of sharing my observations, about a specific use case. We start with the following XSD. Xs:schema xmlns:xs="http:/ www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xs:element name="X" xs:complexType xs:sequence xs:element name="a" type="xs:integer"/ /xs:sequence xs:attribute name="att1" type="xs:boolean"/ /xs:complexType /xs:element. This schema intends to validate an XML instance document like following,.

Tuesday, December 28, 2010. Schema based XML compare. David A. Lee (producer of XMLSH. A command line shell for XML) raised an interesting discussion a while ago on XML-DEV. Mailing list, about how to do XML Schema aware XML document comparison. The whole of this discussion thread can be read here. Suggested to use the XPath 2.0 function deep-equal. For the interest of readers, here's a minimal Java program illustrating this program design. Test 10.00 /test. Xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"? This Xerce...

Personal blog of Larry Masinter on mainly technical topics. March 15, 2018. Tired, Retired, Disabled? Not Working Any More"? It's been six weeks since my surgery, and I've been "programmed" now four times; my neurologist tries to balance the signals to affect tremor, walking and other symptoms. The results are pretty amazing, compared to how I was last year. The many awful symptoms are greatly reduced and infrequent. So I'm really pleased. And I'm sure it will get even better. Links to this post. A device...
