The Wainfleet Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake population is highly isolated, being restricted to Wainfleet Bog (42 55'N, 79 18'E), a 1500 ha peatland, surrounded by roads and agricultural lands located near Port Colborne in the Niagara Region (Fig. 2). The next closest known population occurs about 100 km to the east in Bergen Swamp near Byron, New York.

How to recognize Ontario's only venomous snake . . . The massasauga rattlesnake is not a very large snake - adults are usually 50 to 80 cm long (about as long as your arm). The most distinguishing characteristic of this snake is the rattle at the end of its tail - you won't find any others in Ontario with one! The massasauga is also the only snake in Ontario that has vertical pupils in its eyes (like a cat), but you have to be a little close to see them! Can you tell the rattlesnake.

Monday, October 3, 2011. I am trying to catch up and post a few things. Last May I went out to Alberta with Tom Hince. Our goal was to do a Big Day of birding and hopefully set a new record for Canada. We had done three previous big days in Alberta and last year we were only one species from tying the Canadian record of 214 species. A display of Northern Lights near Cold Lake. Friday, October 15, 2010. I first heard about an irruption of Gray Jays back in September and since that time I heard of reports from Lake Superior east to the Ottawa region. On October 9 we came across the Gray Jay pictured below along a back road seven km NE of Burk's Falls, ON. The bird was a first-year individual based on the ratty pointy-shaped tail feathers. Saturday, April 30, 2011. A friend in British Columbia mentioned a profusion of blooming Purple Dead Nettle. In early April. Here in southern Ontario spring is not so far advance and it wasn't until today that I noticed my first Purple Dead Nettle while driving into the Tremblay Beach Conservation Area. The Massasauga Rattlesnake
The name Massasauga means huge river mouth and it s from the Chippewa language. It was so named because it lives in the marshes around the rivers. The zoological name for this snake is Sistrurus catenatus. It is the only venomous snake to be found in Ontario and one of two in Wisconsin. The length of the snake varies from two to three feet and some adults grown longer than three feet. It has a rattle at the end of its tail and as it moves, this produces a sound which is very like a cricket s.
