Nothing strikes fear into the middle of a person's gut faster than mathematices. But in reality mathematics, above all else, is a language, and is most often used as a tool. Other definitions exist: see wikipedia. For more of them. If you boil away all the rhetoric and scienfic fluff, mathematics is a language, and a language in the sense that English is a language. Mathematices uses symbols; English uses symbols, and these symbols stand for certain ideas, concepts, and meanings. What is a fraction?

What I am calling "Mathematical Tyranny" are rules that serve no mathematical purpose, but are imposed on students learning math. Rationalizing the denominator - why do we do that? As a matter of fact, in Calculus, it is very often desirable to leave the radical in the denominator so that it cancels some factor in the numerator.

The two main branches of calculus are differential calculus, and integral calculus. In short, calculus is the study of functions. Differential calculus deals mainly with rates of change as a function moves through a range of values. Integral calculus deals mainly with the area under a curve of some function. Let's look at differential calculus first. It might help to actually start with an algebra concept - slope.

Notice to the left of zero is where negative numbers live. Also note that we have a piece of the vertical number line. This becomes important when graphing an equation. It is really the same number line, but with the negative numbers starting from zero and going downward. The real issue with signed numbers is in doing arithmetic with them. It wasn't until my mid-thirties that I made conscious effort to rebuild my foundation in math. I started with elementary algebra, and worked my way up through first year calculus. I am still not as intuitive about math as I think I should be, but I can generally get the gist of what's going on.
