My Math Education Blog
My Math Education Blog. There is no one way". Friday, February 23, 2018. In my last post, I offered guidelines for sequencing. 160;math curriculum. The response I got on Twitter (and in one comment to the post) was quite positive. However, one point I made triggered some disagreement:. I don't disagree with what @hpicciotto says in this post either. I square the two by saying vocab probably shouldn't be the start of the unit, but it works nicely for me when it's the start of a lesson. My heuristic is som...

My Math Education Blog: Acceleration
http://blog.mathedpage.org/2014/04/acceleration.html
My Math Education Blog. There is no one way". Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Yes, that is an anecdote about a single student, but it is representative of a broad social phenomenon. Over the years, there has been a disturbing trend towards hyper-acceleration in math education. It started with a full dose of Algebra 1 in eighth grade, but it keeps getting more extreme, with Algebra 1 in 7th grade, AP Calculus in 10th grade, and college courses in 11th and 12th grade. In my next post. Posted by Henri Picciotto.

My Math Education Blog. There is no one way". Sunday, October 23, 2011. Meeting notes 1 - tools, backward design. Last Saturday, I attended an Escape from the Textbook! Meeting. As always, it was stimulating. Here are some notes. The latter robs students of the opportunity to develop their own ideas, and in any case is not very effective. These ideas were familiar to me, as I have written much on this topic. (See for example " For a Tool-Rich Pedagogy. On my Web site. What are the big ideas? This of cour...

My Math Education Blog: About hints
http://blog.mathedpage.org/2015/05/about-hints.html
My Math Education Blog. There is no one way". Friday, May 1, 2015. A few days ago, I saw a raging debate on Twitter about hint-giving in math class. It was triggered by a short talk. This is a great topic, and it gets at some big ideas, so I will jump into the conversation. To use Michael's language, the first hint is too vague, and the second would kill thinking. We need to aim somewhere between those extremes. That would equip her to deal with this in future problems of this type without requiring my a...

My Math Education Blog. There is no one way". Monday, May 11, 2015. In my last post. I summarized Peter Liljedahl's paper on "visibly random groups." That research confirmed many things I already knew from experience. Today, I will summarize another one of his papers, this one titled " Building Thinking Classrooms: Conditions for Problem Solving.
