Math Teacher Mambo: October 2014
http://mathteachermambo.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible." ― Dalai Lama. Thursday, October 23, 2014. I had about 20 minutes after a test today, and RIGHT before the test, a high school student in precalculus was confused about how to divide 2 fractions, and she couldn't remember the method: "do you multiply the top and bottom? Were words that came out of her mouth. So I thought I'd give the following short lesson on why the "flip and multiply" that they seem to spout works. Simplify: (7/3) / (4/5). I am happy wi...
Math Teacher Mambo: December 2014
http://mathteachermambo.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible." ― Dalai Lama. Monday, December 22, 2014. Hello vacation. I have a love/hate thing going with time off. Love the 9 hours of sleep each night. Hate not having so many people to interact with. Love being able to read good books. Hate that at the end of a day I sat too much ("worse than smoking" is now a thing). Love that I have time to cook non-frozen things. Hate that the refrigerator is right there. All the time. Waiting. Calling. You're making us work?

Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible." ― Dalai Lama. Thursday, May 21, 2015. As part of my year-end activities, I made this Mystery Grid Puzzle. I figured it was a way for my students to be careful, be observant, and be artsy all at once. I found a pixelated picture I liked, and then slapped a grid over it. Here. Is a copy if this sound intriguing. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Thursday, May 07, 2015. End of the Year Calculus Project. So you can maybe see why I hesitate to do a project. Involves scr...

Math Teacher Mambo: APCS Concept Map

Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible." ― Dalai Lama. Wednesday, August 05, 2015. For the same reasons I specified in this. Post, I've created a concept map for my APCS class this coming year. I'm excited about teaching it again (after a year break), and hopefully, I can garner enough interest to have the class again in 2 years. We are a small HS, our kids are overbooked, and we all have to work for getting our elective classes to make each year. Is the file if you want to modify or use it.

I am feeling great about all of this. 3 In Precalculus, we have been doing lots of trig and it has been just lovely. I Hope This Old Train Breaks Down. Posts Organized by Date. Posts Organized by Topic. Thursday, October 2, 2014. What to Do When You Are Busy. Today, one of the things I read over the summer came back to me. The thing I read was written by a therapist, regarding his patients who are stressed and unhappy because they feel like they're spread too thin among work, family, friends, etc. The therapist's advice is that you cannot make more minutes in a day, but you can increase the quality. How it Must Feel.

To help kids wrap their minds around basic integral Calculus applications, and this one. Is how I introduced implicit differentiation, using the analysis of non-functional relationships as a premise. Math Teacher in Tanzania | Arusha, Tanzania
Math Teacher in Tanzania. Last hours in Tanzania. June 4, 2011. Math Teacher in Tanzania. I only have a few hours left in Tanzania. We are leaving for the airport at 5:3o, our flight leaves at 8:50. We get in to Amsterdam at 7am – there’s a stopover in Dar es Salaam, which is a bit annoying as we were just there. Evidently there are rules that say that you must leave from the same place that you flew in to for international flights. I’ll be back in the states in 30 hours. Was that real life? June 3, 2011.
