The Doomsday argument - Matt Bamberger's journal

https://mattbamberger.livejournal.com/6034.html

The Doomsday argument - Matt Bambergers journal. 09:48 pm November 9th, 2006. Very briefly, the doomsday argument is a probabilistic argument that near-term human extinction is much more likely than is normally believed. Although the argument doesn't feel quite right to most people (including me), it's surprisingly hard to come up with a definitive counter-argument. Nick Bostrom has a particularly good synopsis. Wikipedia has a more detailed but less concise explanation.

Crocker's rules - Matt Bamberger's journal

Crocker's rules - Matt Bambergers journal. 10:02 pm January 15th, 2006. Never is etiquette and 'good form' observed more carefully than by experienced travellers when they find themselves in a tight place. I recently stumbled across Crocker's Rules. You can find many versions of them on the net: this particular rendition is from DoWire.org. My first reaction was "Cool! I believe in high-bandwidth communication! I believe in raw truth! I believe in taking responsibility for my own emotions! I'm a Crocker'...

Five million PCs - Matt Bamberger's journal

https://mattbamberger.livejournal.com/6540.html

Five million PCs - Matt Bambergers journal. 09:59 pm January 19th, 2006. I recently made the pretty standard claim. That the computational capacity of the human brain is equivalent to that of 5,000,000 modern PCs. There are probably many ways of building an AI that require a great deal less power than that. However, it's very likely that that level of power will be readily available within a few decades. In any case, let's see what 5,000,000 PCs buys you:. Low-level visual cortex: 1,000,000 PCs. Low-leve...

Pulling the trigger, part 2. The Human Security Report. Infovore in a hurry. Pattern recognition, part 1. My plans for 2006. What I believe about the Singularity. Let's build a brain! The rapture for nerds. Further thoughts on immortality. The Singularity is near. The term "substrate" comes up often in discussions about AI, especially in the context of comparing AI to biological intelligence. In traditional computing, we normally use the term "platform" to refer to the same concept. The Human Security Re...

Welcome to Matt Ban’s Official Website!

Matt Ban is a triple threat, if you count moving well as a threat. Which most people don't. Hailing from the prolific state of New Jersey (also the home of the Jersey Housewives and Snooki), Matt went on to study Theatre Performance and earn a Bachelor of Arts from Wagner College in New York City (well Staten Island, but that still counts). He was featured on Broadway in ROCK OF AGES as Dennis DuPree. Welcome to Matt Ban’s Official Website!

Expected results of an MLB Draft. June 8, 2015. Embed from Getty Images. The 2015 MLB Draft kicks off tomorrow, an annual event that leads to dreams of future All-Stars and Hall of Famers. The draft is the lifeblood of major league teams, and one of the most frequently debated topics is how well organizations draft and develop talent. I pulled together the results of the 1987 1999 amateur drafts, leaving me with 362 total team drafts. In their first seven major league seasons. The average seven-year fWAR...
