About | Matt Down Under
https://mattdownunder.com/about
Moving to Australia, and falling in love with nature. In 2008 I decided to travel Australia, not long after finishing university in Germany. I felt the need to do something different and see the world, and so I applied for a Working Holiday Visa in Australia. In the meantime I kept myself busy working in forestry, and I fell in love with Tasmania and its landscape. View from Mt Ossa, Overland Track. In 2011 I received Permanent Residency and decided to leave Tasmania to travel the rest of the country....

Hiking gear | Matt Down Under

A checklist of things I may need (or not) when I go hiking. Every now and then I receive emails from people who want to go hiking in Tasmania, find my blog on Google and ask me for advice. I thought it might be interesting to post a basic checklist, or a list of equipment I use myself when I go bushwalking or hiking some people may find it useful for their own preparations. Keep in mind this is the equipment that works well for me, it doesn’t mean it will necessarily work for. Lowe Alpine Cerro Torre.

Greenie's gone bush: Greenie's Gone Grose Valley - Multi Day walk - Days 1 & 2
http://www.greeniesgonebush.com/2011/06/greenies-gone-grose-valley-multi-day.html
A blog about bushwalking in the aussie bush. Greenie's Gone Grose Valley - Multi Day walk - Days 1 and 2. It is a funny thing what adrenalin and a little bit of motivation can do. It can be great to see the result of those two coming together and what they can achieve. This post is not only about that but also my three day walk in the rugged but equally beautiful Grose Valley in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. Just a few hundred metres walk from the trackhead at the carpark is the Victoria Falls L...

A blog about bushwalking in the aussie bush. Day Walk Gear - Part 1. Being a scout in my younger years I have tried to follow the motto "Be Prepared". So with that I try to make sure the gear is safe, reliable, light and is low in cost or free! So let’s start with the safe stuff things first. So the most important gear I carry with me is a first aid kit. It will hopefully won't be used much. It is a kit put together from a popular outdoors store. In it is:. 1 x triangular bandage non-woven. I could use t...

A blog about bushwalking in the aussie bush. Three days in the Blue Mountains - Day 3. The bottom scenic railway platform. The steepest cable-driven funicular railway in the world. Sorry if this scares you. A part of the Ruined Castle. The south west of Mt Solitary. Castle Head with the Ruined Castle in the forground. With walking for just over 9 hours I was tired but my legs weren't that sore however. I just had to remove a few leaches. After of four days of exercise I had done it! After a look around t...

A blog about bushwalking in the aussie bush. Staples Lookout to Patonga via Rocky Ponds - Overnight Walk - Day 2. After a hard day of walking. It was good to finally to get to sleep. But it was not to be. A monster of the night was going to try to keep me awake and eat my food! It was now 3am. Not wanting stay up the rest of the night, I needed a way to keep it away. So I turned on my headlamp, aimed it towards it, and the monster was gone! And did not return. I left the lamp on until day break. I then w...

A blog about bushwalking in the aussie bush. Staples Lookout to Girrakool after a good downpour. I parked my car at Staples Lookout which is just off Woy Woy Rd. Staples Lookout was named after Charles L Staples, who was councillor, presidents of many organisations such as the local surf club, land developer and even the local coroner. Here there is a good view across to Saratoga, Woy Woy and Umina. Walking downhill the track is quite eroded in places, with parts of the track having small streams of wate...

A blog about bushwalking in the aussie bush. Six Foot Track - Coxs River to Katoomba - Multi Day walk - Day 3. Woke to a very cold morning, with my muscles rather stiff and sore from the last few days of walking. I had full day of walking ahead of me before I would reach civilisation and have the good and bad things that come with it. I hope you read on, to find out about the conclusion of my first multi day walk on this historic and scenic track. The warm July sun was starting to get to me in the open p...

A blog about PR2 Lite and stuff. IOS and Flash Games. February 15, 2014. We’ve made great progress in the cleaning up of PR2Lite into its final configuration. Replacing the old desktop-based computer with its converter with a laptop went a long way to clean up the wiring. We added a shelf for the laptop above the microcontrollers for the linear actuator and wheel pids. The wires now go up in a channel cut into the shelves per its original design. Old video of PR2Lite’s wheel mechanism. Here’s an ol...
