The News and Thoughts of Matthew Neville
Dans Nos Obscurités: Where do we go from here - part 2
http://matthew-neville.blogspot.com/2016/07/where-do-we-go-from-here-part-2.html
The News and Thoughts of Matthew Neville. Wednesday, 20 July 2016. Where do we go from here - part 2. So a month on, a few more thoughts on the aftermath of the referendum. Why did we vote (narrowly) to leave? The truth is that there is no simple answer, and not everyone voted LEAVE or REMAIN for the same reasons. (So please don’t read what follows as claiming they did.). One of the difficulties I’ve been pondering quite deeply over the last month is how to have a constructive national conversation.

The News and Thoughts of Matthew Neville. Sunday, 4 October 2015. You are the Salt of the Earth. To follow Jesus is to be Salt in our World ( Matthew 5:13. What can we make of this obscure metaphor? Dans Nos Obscurités: Where do we go from here?
http://matthew-neville.blogspot.com/2016/06/where-do-we-go-from-here.html
The News and Thoughts of Matthew Neville. Saturday, 25 June 2016. Where do we go from here? I am very disappointed by the result of the referendum. My initial reaction was one of panic, real heart-racing panic, that in time turned to anger and frustration, then sadness. Yesterday was an emotional roller coaster. Some will have shared my experience, others the opposite reaction; and still others would have been less emotionally affected. There are a large range of issues relating to the EU, democracy trus...

Steph's Adventures: A language of peace
http://stepsadventures.blogspot.com/2016/10/a-language-of-peace.html
Reflections and ramblings from life in community in Birmingham city centre. Thursday, 6 October 2016. A language of peace. It was a hymn we sung in church, a few weeks ago now, which reminded me I wanted to write a post on this subject . although it is a theme I have considered writing about previously, but never quite got round to it. That though, is precisely the problem. I have long been uncomfortable with 'warfare' hymns and the constant rhetoric of the 'war on this that and the other' from governmen...
Steph's Adventures: This is Joy
http://stepsadventures.blogspot.com/2016/12/this-is-joy.html
Reflections and ramblings from life in community in Birmingham city centre. Monday, 26 December 2016. Of a world of darkness. Where the news carries anger and pain. Of a spirit that dares to dance. A sliver of silver in a stricken world. That hope lives on. As the earth reaches to heaven. Of a world of fear. Where the news carries division and hurt. Of a spirit that dares to come. A sliver of silver in a darkening sky. That hope lives on. As heaven touches the earth. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Steph's Adventures: On Our Doorstep
http://stepsadventures.blogspot.com/2016/12/on-our-doorstep.html
Reflections and ramblings from life in community in Birmingham city centre. Friday, 2 December 2016. As you probably know, we live in a church in city centre Birmingham. It is, in many ways, a strange place to live: our nearest neighbours are mostly not other homes, but shops and offices. Those who sleep nearby are usually transient: the luckier ones, in local hotels; the unluckier, in local doorways. It struck me because it drew attention to our creation of and participation in the kind of world in whic...

Steph's Adventures: Of mobile phones
http://stepsadventures.blogspot.com/2016/05/of-mobile-phones.html
Reflections and ramblings from life in community in Birmingham city centre. Thursday, 26 May 2016. Compared to many, I am not particularly attached to my mobile phone; but even though the one I use is old and battered, I know I would not want to be without it. For those far from home, it may be of even greater value: the only connection with family, friends and a life left behind. Too great a weight. The bleak, scorched earth. Of burned and blackened land. Left scared and scarred by war. Yet as it burns.
Steph's Adventures: A house of Hope
http://stepsadventures.blogspot.com/2016/12/a-house-of-hope.html
Reflections and ramblings from life in community in Birmingham city centre. Friday, 16 December 2016. A house of Hope. Perhaps I should leave the dust to settle on this week for a little longer before I write this post, and I am sure there will be further reflection to follow, but after one of the stranger weeks in my life it feels important to write something here. to write something entirely in my own words. For probably 18 months or more, we have been reflecting on and working towards the idea of buyi...
Steph's Adventures: That would be an ecumenical matter
http://stepsadventures.blogspot.com/2016/06/that-would-be-ecumenical-matter.html
Reflections and ramblings from life in community in Birmingham city centre. Sunday, 12 June 2016. That would be an ecumenical matter. My engagement with questions of Christian ecumenism has been a hugely significant part of my faith journey for many years, but it is, I recently realised, something I have rarely written about here. Although as this blog post has turned out to be rather longer than intended, perhaps you could say I'm making up for it now! But we are trying to ask something different: we wa...
Steph's Adventures: #teamrefugees
http://stepsadventures.blogspot.com/2016/08/teamrefugees.html
Reflections and ramblings from life in community in Birmingham city centre. Thursday, 18 August 2016. Personally I like words (I think you know that right? But I also know that images are hugely important. We are bombarded with them and the lenses through which we see the world shape the world we see. Whether its the imagery of advertising, humorous memes on social media or what the news cameras choose to focus in on we are all susceptible to the influence of the image. So here are my own #teamrefugees.

The LONG and short of it...
The LONG and short of it. Thursday, August 7, 2014. Oopsas the whole summer slips away. Just realized I never posted about McKinley's birthday. Seeing as how there are a couple other birthdays coming up, I'd better get her on here. McKinley is not a cake girl. Love it! I'm not either) This is one of the few times we crack out our fruit pizza making skills. She and a friend helped decorate it. They had a good time and did an excellent job. Reagan's version of picking huckleberries. Silly kiddo! Looking at...

Dans Nos Obscurités
The News and Thoughts of Matthew Neville. Wednesday, 27 July 2016. Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. The words below are a sermon shared by my Grandfather, Terrence Bailey, in August 1957, he was 27 years old. Terrence died long before I was born so his sermons are an important window into the life of someone I have few ways of knowing. I share this today because it speaks to us here in 2016 about how we find a Christian response to current circumstance. I think a lot of the difficu...
