April 30, 2015 at 3:30 pm ( Uncategorized. The Father alone is God, for he is the sole and sufficient source of both Son and Spirit. The Son alone is God, for there is nothing outside his idea that can known about God, and this “nothing outside” must include existence. The Spirit alone is God, for there is no reason for either the Son or Father to exist except as expressed in him. But what else is the abstract idea itself, or consciousness so far as it makes the abstract idea? Nature has both what is per...

July 31, 2015 at 12:49 pm ( Uncategorized. 1) The fundamental experience of knowledge is. Which is clearest in the thrill of getting a glimpse of what something is. This is therefore the fact that any theory of knowledge has to explain. 2) If insight requires an object fitting the description of a Platonic form, then there is no Nominalist or abstractionist account of insight. 5) Hume is right that the nominal understanding gives no insight into what a thing is and is made for the purposes of life. 7) De...

The Feast of the Assumption and the Blessings of Marriage. August 11, 2015 at 11:57 pm ( Uncategorized. It was a Monday, which turns out is quite a lot cheaper for most wedding expenses! And my mom made the wedding cake (there was a lot of chocolate involved). A dear friend DJ’d the wedding from his iPod. It was beautiful and perfect and surrounded by love: True, sacrificial, life-affirming love. So here’s to Our Lady of the Assumption and sacramental marriage! Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

March 9, 2013 at 11:00 am ( Uncategorized. American schools are models of efficiency, rigor, and perfect consistency in the goal they are seeking to achieve. No one can fail to be impressed by the utter unanimity of mind among everyone involved with them. The American student occasionally talks to or challenges a teacher intellectually, but they never do so to each other. 8221; or “ Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité! The cult of self-esteem is really just an aspect of stomping out the lion (or the beast).

August 7, 2015 at 9:54 am ( Uncategorized. 1) Bill Vallicella and Randall Rauser. Have both defended this argument:. A proof is a logically valid argument based on self-evident premises. We do not have a logically valid argument based on self-evident premises for the existence of God. I think both premises are wrong, but in fairness to Vallicella and Rauser, I can’t prove them false by just showing them the sort of argument they had in mind. So why do I disagree with them? 4) It’s given. 5) So (a) some p...

Kant v. Aristotle on pure reason. May 27, 2015 at 8:22 pm ( Uncategorized. Kant gives a famous and crucial account of his method relative to scholastic metaphysics:. The world and the self exists, but never. De anima, III. 4. Aristotle’s comparison of intellect to sense is fine but a contrast would have made his point clearer. It’s analytic that every cognitive power lacks the form it receives before it receives it, but since a sense power only detects a limited range of forms there is no...Another way t...

A thesis in predestination. August 31, 2015 at 3:43 pm ( Uncategorized. God, looking out over the whole of history and seeing those who will freely cooperate with grace and those who will not, chooses to create only the former. The thesis can be taken either as articulating a mode of Universalism or as an objection to it. At least one student has come to me asking ‘Why did God just not do. Avoid all the problems of predestination and empty out Hell while we’re at it! Richard Dawkins and the Incarnation.

The Physics of Relics. March 30, 2015 at 2:07 pm ( Uncategorized. A colleague asked how one would describe the Catholic teaching on relics. I was struck that the first few reasonable explanations were completely false. True, they help bring the saint to mind; true, they aren’t prayed to with. Now in one sense there’s nothing odd about having physical properties unknown to physics. All proper sensibles are like this (taste, color, texture, etc.). But we also can’t just see these pr...A machine is a condui...
