Matthew M. Hurley
http://www.matthewmhurley.com/index.php
Sunday, June 12, 2011. My website is live as of today. I had put it off far too long, but it didn't actually take so much work. Anyway, here it is. I'll try to get a little photo gallery and a "research interests" page up in a day or two more. This little news feed may act as a blog of sorts. But I won't regularly post to it, so don't stay tuned-in for anything in particular. Matthew Hurley, June 2011.

Social Media Art Inc. and the Folding Hands project. I'm a founding member of the non-profit organization Social Media Art, Inc. The organization was put together to explore ideas in massively collaborative art. The first project being undertaken by our organization is what we call the Folding Hands project. It is what we call the global quilting bee in which tens of thousands of contributors worldwide can help to make an origami tapestry. Matthew Hurley, June 2011.

The pictures here all represent facets of my life. You can click on one of the tabs above to find a gallery. My other main leisure sport is sailing. I don't race yachts; but I do like to cruise them between and amongst beautiful islands. If mountains are where I feel challenged, oceans are where I feel comfortable.

I am a cognitive scientist—a graduate student and research associate—at the Center for Research on Concepts and Cognition. At Indiana University, where I work with Douglas Hofstadter. At the moment, I am more of a theoretical than experimental cognitive scientist or, one might say, a kind of philosopher of mind. But I also foresee the possibility of empirical work in my not too distant future. I grew up a really awkward kid—a late bloomer—in a smallish suburb. Matthew Hurley, June 2011.

Slick

In March/April, I was able to get on board of Slick, a pretty lady and its skipper Tim. Thanks to Matt who was talking about it in passing, and that I couldn’t keep my impulsive brain to shut up, I joined him and was a tiny part of Slick’s adventures around the world. I have good memories of Slick and perhaps in the future can go back for more memories. Tim, Matt, Zach Thanks for the wonderful journey. Read more about Slick’s Adventure. Read more about Matt globetrotting adventures.

Eric P. Nichols. As well as neural networks and backpropogation, read James Gleick's book. And became interested in the complexity of the world and how math and computing could make sense of it. I attended Montana State University. In Lyon, France. I met the late Steve Larson. On a music theory mailing list and he introduced me to the book. Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies. And his students, and thanks to Steve's encouragement I decided to attend IU to work with Doug on. A successor to Steve's.
