Greenland Kayak Mk II: July 2011
http://emma-kayak.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Greenland Kayak Mk II. Sunday, 10 July 2011. As planned, I gave the kayak to my girlfriend as a birthday present, and I'd say it all went well. Of course it also came with a paddle, and a pair of wetsuit gloves (I got blisters from my paddle the first time I paddled so I figured better to wear gloves.). It's a bit hard to see in this picture, but the kayak weighs just over 10 KG, which I count as a success as she needs to be able to carry it. :P. Which she did, down to the beach! Greenland Kayak Mk II: June 2011
http://emma-kayak.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
Greenland Kayak Mk II. Thursday, 30 June 2011. Apparently blogger.com crashed and killed my post. :. Anyways, I went out again yesterday. After a false start because I'm lazy when it comes to measuring I got the stemplates cut out, and got the keel lashed on without any trouble. The chines gave me a little bit of trouble as they simply wouldn't bend enough, so in the end I cut some new one's that were a bit thinner and got them lashed on. So more or less done with the frame now. Tuesday, 28 June 2011.

building a greenland kayak: Frame Finished!
http://matthias-kayak.blogspot.com/2011/04/frame-finished.html
Building a greenland kayak. Wednesday, 13 April 2011. I went out last night and put on the forward deck stringer, which means the frame is officially finished. Work still needing to be done:. Oiling the frame (possibly twice). Bending the coaming (the ring that will be around my waist). Sewing on the skin. Painting the skin to waterproof it. I will upload some pictures of the finished frame next friday when i go out to oil it. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Why a sea kayak?

building a greenland kayak: Finished
http://matthias-kayak.blogspot.com/2011/05/finished.html
Building a greenland kayak. Friday, 20 May 2011. Well, i did actually finish it and paddle it two weeks ago, but completely forgot to post it here. The finished boat weighs 17 kg, which is a fair bit more than i expected, but considering that it's mostly made out of pine, and i think the boat varnish i used was fairly heavy too, it's not really unexpected. So, i carried it down to the water (5 minute walk). And got in (notice the wetsuit, i knew what i was getting into :P. View my complete profile. Trave...

building a greenland kayak: pictures!
http://matthias-kayak.blogspot.com/2011/04/pictures.html
Building a greenland kayak. Tuesday, 26 April 2011. Ok, went a while without access to a camera there, but now i finally managed it. :P. I made the coaming, with a flange all the way around:. It doesn't look too good in the back, but I'll smooth it over when i finish it, i had to put an extra piece of wood on there to hold it together that I'm planning on removing when i stich it together. And i think the masik is strong enough even though i cut it out of a straight piece instead of the curved one:.

building a greenland kayak: Paddling
http://matthias-kayak.blogspot.com/2011/06/paddling.html
Building a greenland kayak. Sunday, 12 June 2011. Two months since I finished it, I finally had time to go out for another paddle. This time it felt a lot better than last time. The waterline is around the bottom of the gunwhales at the seat, and while it is fairly unstable, it is possible to balance. :P. I'll still paint it, and make deck lines, somewhere down the line, but next weekend I'm planning on going shopping for wood for my gf's kayak. :D. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Why a sea kayak?

building a greenland kayak: February 2011
http://matthias-kayak.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Building a greenland kayak. Wednesday, 23 February 2011. I'm planning to build a skin-on-frame sea kayak, inspired by the greenland style. I've ordered chris cunninghams book (forgot the name of it, but i'll post it when i get it after this weekend). I'll most likely start by making a paddle, and then i'll make a "test kayak" with willow shoots and a tarp. ( 4 hour kayak. The test one is mostly to have something to play with while building though. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.
