Matt's Miscellany: Old Pulteney 12 year old

http://mattsmiscellany.blogspot.com/2010/12/old-pulteney-12-year-old.html

A blog dedicated to miscellaneous hobbies, pursuits, interests including wine, scotch, tequila, bartending, coffee. Single Malt Scotch Listing. Tuesday, December 14, 2010. Old Pulteney 12 year old. Old Pulteney 12 year old. Availability: Readily available in specialty shops. According to the bottle sleeve, the stills are quite odd:. I found pictures of both stills in this informative post here. And there is little question that they were jury rigged to fit within the constraints of the premises. Starts o...

Matt's Miscellany: January 2010

A blog dedicated to miscellaneous hobbies, pursuits, interests including wine, scotch, tequila, bartending, coffee. Single Malt Scotch Listing. Saturday, January 23, 2010. After reading about the advantages of Chemex-brewed coffee for years, I finally put one on my X-mas list and received one from my parents this year. I love the simple, modern design of the carafe with its wood and leather girdle. Some history according to the Chemex website:. Incidentally, I previously owned the Chemex water kettle whi...

A blog dedicated to miscellaneous hobbies, pursuits, interests including wine, scotch, tequila, bartending, coffee. Single Malt Scotch Listing. Sunday, November 28, 2010. Wine Tasting in Paso Robles, November 2010. Were only pouring the wines which weren't sold out - Outsider, Screwball and Slacker. Good wines, but didn't excite me for the price. Kitschy castle with suits of armor and other castle-ey stuff inside. No wine to recommend here. After hearing about this winery from Paso locals for years, fina...

Matt's Miscellany: April 2010

A blog dedicated to miscellaneous hobbies, pursuits, interests including wine, scotch, tequila, bartending, coffee. Single Malt Scotch Listing. Saturday, April 24, 2010. A Couple of Chinottos. Up for consideration in this post is the Italian soda Chinotto, a somewhat unusual tonic which combines the bitter chinotto fruit with some additional herbal flavors. It's kind of like an Italian amaro (envision a blend of Campari and Ramazzotti) in a refreshing soda format. The chinotto fruit is an essential flavo...

Rancho Garbanzo: Chopped Eggplant

http://ranchogarbanzo.blogspot.com/2010/10/chopped-eggplant.html

Gardening, Cooking, and Renovating in Garvanza, Los Angeles. Monday, October 4, 2010. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't run across something that makes me think about my Grams. A dirty joke (she could have a pretty raunchy sense of humor). Calla Lilies at Trader Joe's (we would "paint" them with powdered chalk at Easter time). Sweet 'n Low packets at a restaurant (she helped herself to them - for her morning coffee at home). All kinds of random things. That was another story. 1 medium red pepper.

Rancho Garbanzo: Lawn Part 1

http://ranchogarbanzo.blogspot.com/2010/09/lawn-part-1.html

Gardening, Cooking, and Renovating in Garvanza, Los Angeles. Wednesday, September 22, 2010. It is a buffalo grass developed by UC Davis specifically for Southern California and arid regions. It requires a quarter of the water that typical grasses require, and it needs little or no mowing. Some people have not mowed their lawn in 2 years. They put out less water per hour, this reduces runoff, allowing the water to soak in properly. They are also elgible for rebates from the state (25 head min.) an...In Pa...

Rancho Garbanzo: July 2010

http://ranchogarbanzo.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Gardening, Cooking, and Renovating in Garvanza, Los Angeles. Saturday, July 24, 2010. Main Sewer Line Replacement. About a year ago, our sewer backed up. Needless to say, it was a mess and at after-hours roto-router pricing, costly to deal with. We have a cleanout under the house for this sort of situation, but it being the old style cast iron, was rusted closed. The plumber had to go through a waste stack in the roof. Trenched and ready to go. The narrow pipe in front is the. Middle of the photograph.

Rancho Garbanzo: October 2009

http://ranchogarbanzo.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Gardening, Cooking, and Renovating in Garvanza, Los Angeles. Friday, October 23, 2009. Last weekend we planted our berry patch. We dug out the crusty lump of earth, just below the herb garden, removing the fine clay soil about a foot deep. Into the hole went a mass of alfalfa that will eventually rot and give the spot a boost of organic matter (we hope). The alfalfa was topped with many bags of new, loamy, composty garden soil. And nine new strawberry plants were planted. Woot woot! Links to this post.

Rancho Garbanzo: August 2009

http://ranchogarbanzo.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

Gardening, Cooking, and Renovating in Garvanza, Los Angeles. Tuesday, August 11, 2009. Since our first crop of cucumbers and cabbage last year I have become increasingly interested in home pickling. While I have always liked a good half-dill from a Jewish deli or finely shredded German style sauerkraut with a grilled Bratwurst, making your own is a different business. Back in March of 2008 I found myself captivated by a discussion on KCRW's. Between the show's host Evan Kleiman and. Repeat until all your...

Rancho Garbanzo: November 2009

http://ranchogarbanzo.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Gardening, Cooking, and Renovating in Garvanza, Los Angeles. Tuesday, November 17, 2009. Rancho Rewind: Beet Pizza. One of the things that I'm most looking forward to in the winter garden are all of the beets. Last year Jeremy and I made beet pizza a couple of times, and flipping through photos, I came across one of our creations that got me excited for this years crop. I scrub them, cut the tops off, and put them into a roasting pan or pyrex. Cut the cooled beets into thick slices. Fresh parsley, chopped.

Jeffrey Morgenthaler » How to Make Your Own Grenadine

http://www.jeffreymorgenthaler.com/2009/how-to-make-your-own-grenadine

Man, there are few things out there more polarizing to people than creamy drinks. And it’s funny, you know, because I think it’s a pretty universal thing that our mouths just water at the sight of a creamy cocktail. Look at a properly made Ramos Gin Fizz. Or a White Russian. Or Egg Nog. How delicious do they look? But there’s no getting around the delicious factor. So what about alternatives? My partner in crime at Clyde Common is a gentleman named Benjamin Amberg. But we all call him (among other th...
