Goodbye, Tumblr! Hello, Jekyll! - Matt Spitz
https://mattspitz.me/2014/01/07/goodbye-tumblr-hello-jekyll.html
Matt Spitz software engineering musings. January 7th, 2014. As of today, I’ve officially migrated this blog from Tumblr to Jekyll. For me, the major advantage of Jekyll is control. I don’t have a complicated site, and I’m frustrated when I have to guess what Tumblr is doing under the hood when I know it’s simple enough to do on my own. When I write a post with Jekyll, it’s just text. I can write it offline using whatever tools I want. Laquo; Worse is Better in the Play Store. Middot; mailing list. I scre...

Matt Spitz software engineering musings. Yearly vesting considered harmful. January 16th, 2014. Tech companies will often include some sort of equity in their compensation packages. It’s an excellent way to motivate employees, as they’re literally invested in the success of the company. For smaller startups, this equity typically comes in the form of options the. Each month. In both cases, the entire 100% is paid out over four years. Laquo; Goodbye, Tumblr! Poor man's asset management ». Pulse-width modu...
Staying curious - Matt Spitz
https://mattspitz.me/2012/10/10/staying-curious.html
Matt Spitz software engineering musings. October 10th, 2012. There’s obviously a tradeoff here. A jack of all trades is a master of none, and it pays (literally) to have in-depth knowledge of a subset of the tools available. But staying curious is critical to remaining on top of what’s going on in this fast-moving industry, and it’s not something that I can take for granted. Learn new technologies, read up on the latest research, and keep building stuff. Stay curious. It’s worth it. Middot; mailing list.

Matt Spitz software engineering musings. Poor man's asset management. January 17th, 2014. One of the challenges of web development is figuring out how best to use the browser’s download cache. When you surf the ‘net, if anyone uses that term any more, webpages and images aren’t downloaded every time you access them. The browser saves that extra work, time, and bandwidth by caching resources images, pages, scripts, and styles it’s already downloaded. You would use something like. Will get the freshest tha...
Pulse-width modulation, hysteresis, and transferring large files. Oh my! - Matt Spitz
https://mattspitz.me/2012/11/30/pulse-width-modulation-hysteresis-and-transferring-large-files.html
Matt Spitz software engineering musings. Pulse-width modulation, hysteresis, and transferring large files. Oh my! November 30th, 2012. I came home from Thanksgiving with a bloated stomach and few enormous files that I planned to back up on my home computer. These files were on the order of 100s of GB and left me only about 30GB free on my hard drive. And now, fair readers, I will share the harrowing tale of The File That Wouldn’t Fit Twice. Using a couple of electronics tricks learned in ME210. But the p...
