Iao Valley

The Iao Valley is known mostly for the 2,250 foot high needle, which rises from the floor of the valley. It's in an area of rain forest, frequently in clouds such as those in these photos. This area under a walking bridge is a popular spot for locals to jump into. The water is not much more than 4-5 feet deep, so the jump requires some skill and daring to accomplish successfully. Big Beach

This is Big Beach, known also as Makena. It was established as a state park in recent years, to prevent being taken over by development, as the resorts have progressed along the coast from Kihei to Wailea, and to Makena. It is a wonderful beach, with frequent high surf breaking on the shore, causing excitement to those unfamiliar with the possibilities. Friendly birds, checking out Pete's backpack. Me, pretending to try to catch waves into the shore break. Other scenery at the beach.
