August 6, 2015–into the woods. August 6, 2015. A second batch of bees. I don’t know but I’m surely glad there are lots of them now. I didn’t plant a succession of flowering plants specifically for the bees but that’s how it’s worked out. The borage, heliopsis, phlox, squash and garlic chives are flowering now along with the Culver’s roots. Soon the oregano will flower and lastly will be the sedum. I hope there will be lots of bees next spring. Back in the saddle again: 8/3/2015. August 4, 2015. A summary...

June 16, 2015–another garden buddy; peony rains. June 16, 2015. It started raining lightly this afternoon and the forecast is for rain off and on this week. It was 43 degrees this morning. It’s appropriate for rain to fall now that the peonies are blooming. I can’t remember that it’s ever failed to rain when the peonies bloom. I think the clouds are upset with the beauty of peonies and can’t wait to flatten them. Carolyn standing next to the big honeysuckle on John Friederichson’s sculpture, which ...

June 21, 2015–the day after the summer solstice–now the days start getting shorter again. June 22, 2015. Bear tracks on Aaron’s road last week. Toad in the vegetable garden–another garden buddy. Rather pathetic blooms on the iris we imported from Nebraska. Ox-eye daisies (technically a noxious weed but I like them) and orange Dropmore honeysuckles flowers. Annuals starting to bloom. Family of skunks going down a driveway about 2 miles away from our place. July 1, 2015–the woodchuck.

June 13, 2015–working in the flower beds; new critters. June 14, 2015. Now for the pictures which also include Hank and Natty. Fern leaf bleeding heart–I’ve had this for years and now it’s inside the vegetable garden–one of the only perennials to bloom all season long. A visitor on our first peony to bloom. Chokecherries behind the orchard. Honeyberries–not enough to make a compote but enough to nibble on. Some other kind of small bees or flies on the spirea. Bumblebee inside the wild rose flower. June 7, 2015–garden buddies and kiwi flowers – mauricesgarden

https://mauricesgarden.wordpress.com/2015/06/07/june-7-2015-garden-buddies-and-kiwi-flowers

June 7, 2015–garden buddies and kiwi flowers. June 7, 2015. Today I transplanted grass–pulling it out from flower beds where it wasn’t wanted and planting in into dead spots in the lawn where I hope it will survive. In the process of going hither and yon I took some pictures of some garden buddies at our place and then found that the kiwi vine we’d gotten from a friend some years ago is now blooming for the first time! June 4, 2015–BWCA interlude followed by the purple phase of the garden.

The knitting experience in culture, history, and daily life. Knitting like it’s 1995. Asymp; 1 Comment. When I think of my fall from prodigious, devoted knitter to inveterate web-surfer, I recall an essay by Rebecca Solnit. “In or around June 1995 human character changed again,” she writes in her August 2013 essay. What a different world from today: we might as well have been driving horse-drawn buggies! So little leisure time for making handcrafts. It’s necessary to have. 8221; (my emphasis). The th...

This geographic and political situation of the Baltic countries brings to mind a catchy song by the Latvian rock band Prāta Vētra (Brainstorm), called “ Starp Divām Saulēm. Growing up in my small hometown in northern Minnesota, Finnish influence was a quiet but certain presence in our lives: our neighbors took saunas, in school we celebrated St. Urho for driving the grasshoppers out of Finland, we told Finnish jokes, and our Finnish-heritage teachers made us learn how to spell their sharp, rolling long last names (can you spell Koskiniemi? Summer, though, I sa...
