Poor lamb, he was struggling to breathe as the combined weight of Mildred and her winter clothes combined with what must have been the most malodorous smell of goose grease forced him to panic and attempt to struggle to his feet. I love reading about old Pickwick's permabulation around the country and have an image of him as a rather rotund but jocular character much given to welcoming friends to harmonious meals in taverns.
