IRRESISTIBLE TARGETS: August 2015
http://irresistibletargets.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 25 August 2015. MAGNOLIA, YOU SWEET THING (a poem): SPRINGSTEEN, ANNIE and ME. Forty years ago today, Born To Run was released, and Bruce Springsteen. Along with us on the trip was the Annie of this poem, Annie Donnelly, whom I'd met while I was teaching summer school at Wesleyan. I'd just met Tom Disch, who was also teaching there, on the bus up to Middletown (I've written about that here). I've just moved house again, and. MAGNOLIA, YOU SWEET THING. The dew has burned away. It will be as b...

IRRESISTIBLE TARGETS: RAGNAR JONASSON'S SNOW BLIND
http://irresistibletargets.blogspot.com/2015/07/ragnar-jonassons-snow-blind.html
Wednesday, 29 July 2015. RAGNAR JONASSON'S SNOW BLIND. Ari Thor is an oddly unfinished character, which may suit his relatively naiveté, but it stands in sharp contrast to the more telling bits of exposition the various suspects and victims receive. There's a fascinating dynamic between him and his boss, Tomas, whose live and let live attitude sometimes seems to take on a more sinister connotation, and sometimes seems almost comic: casting him in the film version is an amusing exercise. Film ed. Crim...

IRRESISTIBLE TARGETS: MEMORIES OF FRANK GIFFORD
http://irresistibletargets.blogspot.com/2015/08/my-memories-of-frank-gifford.html
Sunday, 9 August 2015. MEMORIES OF FRANK GIFFORD. The estimable Mike Rosen, former editor of Sport magazine, was along to write for him, like a third wheel on a honeymoon. I recall my mother telling me about Kathie Lee bragging about their sex life at some golf tournament ABC was covering; I believe that was the Friday a couple of my colleagues and I celebrated our promotions by destroying Caramba before returning to an empty office. And he was everything Exley worshipped, and more, and less. I remember ...

IRRESISTIBLE TARGETS: April 2015
http://irresistibletargets.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, 30 April 2015. LAWRENCE PHILLIPS AND ME: MY NFLUK COLUMN. Even if you're not an American football fan, the story of Lawrence Phillips, who's recently been accused of murdering his cellmate in prison, is a sad one. My experience with Lawrence, and a preview of the NFL Draft which takes place today, are in my Friday Monthly Tight End column at nfluk.com; you can find it here. Or, six weeks later, I've posted the whole piece here, though I do recommend my pretty accurate NFL Draft preview too:.

IRRESISTIBLE TARGETS: May 2015
http://irresistibletargets.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Sunday, 31 May 2015. JO NESBO'S BLOOD ON SNOW. On the surface, Blood On Snow. Reminds one of Headhunters. It's a piece of finely crafted writing, a slighter-seeming novel that may as good and more powerful than any he's written before. Movie rights have been sold, Leonardo DiCaprio is mentioned and would be all wrong for the role, but like Headhunters,. Will adapt well to film. If the well-judged book is just left alone. Blood On Snow by Jo Nesbo. Harvill Secker £12.99 ISBN 9781846558603. He'd worked his...

IRRESISTIBLE TARGETS: DEFLATEGATE: LETTING THE AIR OUT
http://irresistibletargets.blogspot.com/2015/06/deflategate-brief-commentary.html
Thursday, 25 June 2015. DEFLATEGATE: LETTING THE AIR OUT. With Tom Brady's hearing with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell just completed, I went back and found this column I'd written, but not published, back in the end of May. It remains relevant, although you'll see by the update that the questions around the so-called 'deflategate' are even more unresolved now than they were then. There is a basic question in the 'deflategate' 'scandal' which has not even been addressed. Why? For any shooting star'.
