Does the instinct of survival come before the impulse to help other people? Is sympathy only possible in times when it is convenient? Human beings have been able to succeed and develop because of their ability to collaborate, but when collaboration and socialization leads to death, does man abandon their fellow man so quickly? Looking at London through Literature. April 18, 2011. For our final project we are presenting a digital mapping artifact. My group has created a Google map that tracks the movements of Nancy, Sikes, and Fagin throughout Dickens’. We felt that because Dickens had such an intimate knowledge of London that the locations would not be arbitrary or random. As we worked on the project we found we were correct. Looking at London through Literature. London Bridge in Oliver Twist. February 21, 2011. I have been fascinated by the character, Nancy. Perhaps this is why I chose to do my research project on prostitution. Towards the end of the novel I think the importance of Nancy becomes even more prevalent. I was especially interested in the scene involving the London Bridge. A bridge links one place to another. Using this definition as a metaphor is such a common mechanism in literature that it even appears in.

Looking at London through Literature. April 4, 2011. Is set on the day of one of the largest anti-war protests in England. This environment provides the backdrop for the novel and plays a significant role in it. The novel opens with a plane going down in flames, a clear reference to 9/11, one of many things that places this novel in the ‘post 9/11’ genre. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. I normally do not like having people I do not really know read my rough drafts. However this time it was actually beneficial and not that painful. I think reading the WOVEN text on this subject helped. It helped the whole class to be better peer reviewers and better reviewees. JPY Essay – 1st Draft. January 27, 2011. The narrat...

Just another WordPress.com site. Late Post: Reflecting on “Saturday”. April 22, 2011. The image above aims to lampoon realists as unnecessarily concerned with the minutia of life. The overall pessimism that realists inhabit lead them to be “bleakly morose”. Henry Perowne, while not necessarily a realist in the literary sense, is certainly a rationalist. Perowne has no taste for fantasies or fiction, but is constantly thinking and analyzing things, including himself. Life Out of Balance. February 19, 2011.
