Swift Notes: JULY UPDATE: FIELD IDENTIFICATION OF ADULT CHIMNEY SWIFTS IN THE SUMMER RANGE

JULY UPDATE: FIELD IDENTIFICATION OF ADULT CHIMNEY SWIFTS IN THE SUMMER RANGE. All birds replace worn and damaged feathers through the annual moulting process. For chimney swifts in Manitoba, the summer moult overlaps with breeding activities. Feather replacement is an energy consuming affair for all birds, but it further taxes breeding swifts. As our monitoring season continues, so does the swift's moulting. However, within several days post-fledging, young swifts are proficient fliers and they are not ...

An August Update AND a Video! SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 2015. The day started with promise. It was a lovely, sun-drenched morning with light winds. Here is a synopsis of the monitoring session at the St. Adolphe Catholic Church, which spanned 8:50 to 10:50 AM:. 8:50 monitoring session starts. 9:16:20 entry (2 adults in now).

The end is fast approaching! The end is fast approaching! Ok, not quite that end but we are almost at a point where the chattering will cease, the skies above will empty of our ‘flying cigars’, temperatures will drop and there will be an 8 month hiatus in cases of severe neck strain across Manitoba. Yes, that’s right, the swifts will be gone and an empty void will fill our lives. Secondly, we are hoping to launch a new scheme in the back of this year called ‘Swift Champions’. Location, Location, Location. You have all heard the real estate mantra "Location, Location, Location". For chimney swift lodgings, location is an important factor too. Old growth forests and natural tree cavities once satisfied all of the swift's housing needs. As those mature forest tracts became lost, chimney swifts adapted by shifting to urban, human-built habitat - chimneys. Http:/ www.mbchimneyswift.ca/Documents/MCSI artificialstructures2015.pdf. Successful experiments require data input and assess...

The transition from June to July was a wicked weather weekend! Unfortunately, the St. Adolphe. Despite the difficulties elsewhere, good news prevails in Selkirk. Ruby and her diligent group of monitors reported an exciting development in the discovery of a new site. On July 7, chimney swifts were observed entering a chimney on Manitoba Ave (i.e. the main west-to-east one-way street in Selkirk, running between Main St and Eveline Ave)". Congratulations on your sleuthing! The dispersal of chimney swifts fr...

UP, UP, AND NEARLY AWAY. MCSI AUGUST 2014 BULLETIN. These are exciting times in which we live. Especially when we make connections with chimney swifts. Since the beginning of August, chimney swift sightings from far and wide were reported (some for earlier in the season); fledged young were identified on the wing; recent counts at well monitored roost sites indicated that migration was underway; and vigilant monitors reported newly discovered chimney swift nest sites. Up north in Dauphin. 8203;Many thank...
