The Hurler On The Ditch. Wednesday, October 12, 2005. Web search firm Google - whose motto is "don't be evil" - is setting up a subsidiary dedicated to doing good. Its new philanthropic division, named Google.org, will fund social investment projects in the developing world. Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are devoting 1% of Google's stock and profits - almost $1bn (Â 573m) - to the new charitable venture. Mr Page and Mr Brin said they would set up a Google Foundation to do "good things for the world".

Nicholas Negroponte, chairman and founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Labs, has been outlining designs for a sub-$100 PC. The laptop will be tough and foldable in different ways, with a hand crank for when there is no power supply. Professor Negroponte came up with the idea for a cheap computer for all after visiting a Cambodian village.
