Voyage of "Nechtan"
http://www.mcnaughtan.net/Martinique.html
Martinique - January 2004. We arrived in France (because Martinique is a part of France both politically and culturally) on 15th January after an overnight sail from Barbados. Being French means that in Martinique you can experience all that's good about France, such as the food, wine and sophistication (whatever that is! And they drive like they do in France too - nae manners, too fast, cut corners, that kind of thing. French sophistication - what can you wipe up with Martiniquan kitchen paper? Tom did ...

Venezuela - Oct-Dec 2004. We arrived back in Cumaná on the 6th October to overpowering heat and humidity. After a few days acclimatising, i.e. lying in a pool of sweat, saying Oh, it's hot., we got on with all the maintenance work needed on the boat. Nechtan. Had survived the ferocious Venezuelan sun pretty well, but was still in need of some TLC, like touching up the paintwork, resealing deck seams, re-antifouling, servicing the winches, servicing the windvane, etc, etc. For those of you lucky enough no...

Curaçao - January 2005. It was an easy day's sail from Bonaire to Curaçao. We arrived in the perfect shelter of Spanish Waters around 3pm on Hogmanay (New Year's Eve). The floating bar at Sarifundy's Marina had a party organised so, along with many other boat people, we turned up there ready for the usual celebrations. At midnight, the Dutch tradition of New Year fireworks became apparent - it was like an air-raid! Add to this Tom playing the pipes and it was bedlam. Happy New Year 2005! The island still...

Scotland - April to October 2004. We arrived at Glasgow airport on 8th April and were met by some of Tom's family. It felt nice to be cool again! We bought an old car and after a few days resting and catching up with family and friends, we drove to Oban on Scotland's west coast. We spent the next 6 weeks there, helping put together a marina on the Island of Kererra, on the other side of Oban Bay. It felt good to be working hard in wide open spaces after so much confinement on a boat. Tom and Mr Percival'...

WELCOME to the website for S.V. NECHTAN and her crew! We are Tom and Sue McNaughtan and this website is an online journal, describing our voyage on our sailing boat Nechtan from Scotland to Australia. We left our jobs as software engineers at the end of April 2003 and sailed out of Peterhead harbour on 22 June, having sold our cars, packed our worldly possessions away and rented out our house. This was the culmination of over 10 years planning, saving and preparing the boat for long-distance voyaging.
