At a time in my life when I was first trying to become a published author and book illustrator - and about to give up because it was so hard - I bought a piece of Bazooka bubble gum. When I unwrapped the gum, the fortune written under the comic was: "Never compromise on your dreams." I cried. (I can be a very emotional person.) That fortune inspired me to keep working. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK WHEN YOU WERE A KID? When I was in third grade, I loved this library book about caves. I kept checking it out and wanted to discover a cave like the boy in the book and have an adventure. I still like to have adventures but haven't discovered any caves. Yet. My other favorites were anything science fiction or fantasy. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE SUBJECT IN SCHOOL? Art in elementary school, science in middle school and English and Drama in high school. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ANIMALS?

This is fawn season and a doe has brought her two spotted fawns into our backyard at least three times that I’ve noticed. Undoubtedly more often. I figure she’s teaching them how to drink from birdbaths and which yards have the tastiest leaves. Therein lies a problem. Our mule deer also avoid springtime narcissus, daffodils, iris and gladiolus. Sage and lavender also survive.
