Friday, August 15, 2014. The Locke project (Not clock related). My 1970 Locke lawnmower. Gotta love the thing. In many circles believed to be one of the sturdiest, and finest cutting machines ever made. For years they were the only machines used on the White House and Capital grounds. Unfortunately, the high maintenance costs and fancier commercial machines available have thrown them by the wayside. Not mine though. Here it is before. This was the first day. Before and after of one of the clutches.

Saturday, September 6, 2014. What's an air lock? Most of the antique Welch barometers had "air locks" in them to prevent any air to enter the upper section of the tube in case the instrument was carelessly handled or laid flat without preparing first. Here is an air lock I made the other day. It's basically a smaller tube in a larger tube. Saturday, March 28, 2015. Protect those clock hands? I guess whoever put this together last really wanted to safeguard either the minute hand or the hand taper pin so why not use a lockwasher. On a wooden wheel a piece of oak or maple or birch or something hard is dovetailed into a notch filed or saw cut in the gear. Even a perfect tight fit should still be glued as a safety measure. Not shown is a final picture of the tooth stained to match the gear. Forgot to take that pic. Pictures of before, ready with blank, and finished. Replacement tooth is at 12 o'clock.
