Jun 27, 2013. Random stuff from the last weeks. During the last three weeks some things worth a post have happended:. In June we organized an Open Data Barcamp in Ulm. In discussions with people who aren’t familiar with the term Open Data I often get asked what people could do with publicly available data sets. To better answer this, I created the tumblr opendatashowcase.tumblr.com. The other outcome of the Barcamp was the “ When do students submit assignments? For example). Plan 9 is an operating sy...

Mar 21, 2011. Using git as an autoupdate mechanism. This article was originally published on the blog ioexception.de. If you are developing software with a client-server infrastructure, you may have the need to safely update your client systems. In my case I had several devices in ubiquitary environments without any human technical maintenance. I needed an update mechanism which makes it easy to deploy new software to all machines. I had several needs for the system:. The update server must not be public...

Aug 7, 2016. Backpacking South America (Part 7). Paul, an Australian, interrupted Jay. 8220;So, where exactly are you from again? 8220;It’s hard to say, really”, sighed Jay. “I’ve been travelling for some time now. I don’t feel like I belong to any one place in the world. I’m really from nowhere and everywhere at the same time, if you know what I mean.”. 8220;How long have you actually been on the road? 8221; asked Giles, a longhaired backpacker from the UK. Paul raised his eyebrows. We have spent some t...

Apr 20, 2014. Interactive Installation: “Kunst oder Kitsch? Valerie is currently presenting on the ongoing exhibition “ Kunst oder Kitsch? 8221; in Bad Schussenried (13. April – 22. June 2014). The idea was to let different artists (eighteen in total) explore where the separation between art and kitsch lies. What is still art and what is kitsch? Where does the line lie? I liked the exhibition a lot! It basically works like this: you press one of the buttons to vote if the exhibition rather presents art o...

May 1, 2014. Comic Strip Why you shouldn’t mail *.doc files. This is another project I started about two and a half years ago, but never got around to properly finish. The idea came about when encountering some of the annoying things which some people on the internet do: forwarding chain-mails or mailing *.doc files, for example. So instead of replying such *.doc mails with a textual explanation it would be more practical (and probably the sender would take it better) to link a comic strip. There are a l...

Aug 21, 2016. I got myself a little present: a nearly forty year old analogue film camera — the Olympus OM-2n with a 50mm f/1.8 lense. I have quite some fun with it and since two weeks I photograph solely with this camera. I don’t even take a digital camera with me anymore. Aug 7, 2016. Backpacking South America (Part 8). I shot the photos in this post with the same throwaway camera that I had with me on a couple of journeys before (they can be found in older posts tagged with throwaway camera. Right now...

Oct 3, 2010. Several banking houses use LaTeX to generate their bank statements (in german: Kontoauszüge) into pdfs. There are many pros to such a system: speed, small pdf size and a large number of packages, for example. In my case I had to adjust the invoices of a Magento Online-Shop instance. Basically I wrote an extension for Magento which serves pdf invoices generated from a LaTeX template. The code is available for free, licensed under the LGPL. Check out my github account.
