Wednesday, October 23, 2013. Kids garb blitz : Rus Pants for 3 Year Old. So this was a pretty fun item to make. It took a few days of thought, but once I decided how to do it, this pair of Rus pants went together in a day. The internet, unfortunately, is pretty sparse on this style of pant in terms of actually making them. I did find several great recreations, though, and in the end, I did located this site. With the seams at the top away from you, fold one layer up at the knot point so that the two edge...

Wednesday, September 25, 2013. Kids garb blitz: Elizabethan Coif. We're switching back to my daughter's Elizabethan outfit today. I had figured that a new headdress was in order way back in the planning stages for this outfit, but it wasn't until I used an old pink linen cap for her kirtle photo shoot that I realized how badly she needed a better hat. Since the whole outfit is Elizabethan, it made sense to make a coif suitable for the mid-to-late 15th century. Before I did anything with the fabric, thoug...

Tuesday, April 22, 2014. Getting Rid of the Day Camp. For the first time in several months, our schedules worked out in such a way that it was feasible to bring all four kids to the event this past weekend. Not entirely sure how that would work out, and even more unsure about the conditions of the event's new site, there was no small amount of trepidation about whether this was truly a good idea. Hand-in-hand with our previous discovery that spending the day tied to our chairs was just a bad idea. We kne...

modern medieval family: is event behavior driven by boredom? | Growing Up Medieval

Friday, August 10, 2012. Modern medieval family: is event behavior driven by boredom? This post is something of a follow up to my last post. Which I've been thinking a lot about since posting it. When we added the twins into the event mayhem, O had already established an untrustworthy repertoire at events. We couldn't rely on him to help us out by simply behaving. Events, then, started to come with a caveat. If we go, we have to deal with the misbehavior. There have been many times in recent mont...Now, ...

kid's garb blitz : Elizabethan Loose Gown | Growing Up Medieval
http://growingupmedieval.blogspot.com/2013/10/kid-garb-blitz-elizabethan-loose-gown.html
Wednesday, October 9, 2013. Kids garb blitz : Elizabethan Loose Gown. The final component to my daughter's winter garb is a loose gown. In this particular case, it's meant more for a jacket layer than a true gown, but it's styled after some of the Spanish loose gown looks. I really just winged this one, and I can see where I may have needed to do it differently, but it all made sense to me as I worked. To create the poofy sleeves, I enlarged the sleeve head to be gathered into the arm hole. I used black ...

Wednesday, October 30, 2013. Kids garb blitz : taking a moment to buy more fabric. Well, it finally happened. I ran out of fabric. For kids' garb anyway. But that's probably a good thing, since I'm also ready to take a break on the Blitz. It's been incredibly productive, and there's still at least 2 items I'd like to make, but I need to take a moment, regroup, and get my materials in order. So, as a recap, here's what the Blitz produced:. For my 3-year old daughter. A Rus-inspired yellow linen tunic.

http://growingupmedieval.blogspot.com/2012/08/lessons-learned-not-involving-your-kids.html
Thursday, August 9, 2012. Lessons learned: Not involving your kids. A few months ago, we had to make a tough decision, one that greatly changed our participation in SCA events. We had to make the decision to not involve our kids as much in our hobby. Specifically, we decided not to take the kids to camping events, at least until they don't require the high level if supervision they need now. I want my kids to go to events. I want them involved. But I also don't want to be selfish at the expense o...This ...

Monday, March 10, 2014. Modern medieval family : Wagons. Often, event locations are situated away from parking areas, and more often that not, cars are prohibited from driving directly up to where you want to set up. While we could all certainly do with the exercise of hauling our stuff load after load several yards at the start and end of each event, add kids into the mix, and you quickly realize you could use a little assistance.
