Comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}. Thursday, October 27, 2005. RA Far Better Auction Games Out There. Let me get this off my chest from the very start -. For me, Ra. Is a wholly unfulfilling experience. From the lack of information on the tiles, being forced into turns (rather than having decisions) and the lack of action variety makes Ra. One of my least favorite Reiner Knizia games. What do I dislike about Ra? 1) Being Force Fed Your Turn. 2) Lack of Intuitive Information. 3) Knowing You Can't Win.

Comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}. Friday, September 30, 2005. In Case of Emergency, Break Game The Anarchist's Guide to Making Games Implode. I just posted a slightly tongue-in-cheek GeekList over at BoardGameGeek. About games that have mechanical chokepoints - games that can either be sabotaged to stalemate (something occurs that freezes the game an no one can play) or artifically ended before the proper game flow ever really gets established. Sounds benign, right? And the other implosive games. Posted ...

Comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}. Sunday, April 30, 2006. Geekway to the West A Smashing Success. Just wanted to drop a quick line to tell everyone how smoothly the Geekway went. Despite my anxieties, it can be considered nothing short of a complete, total, sweeping and utterly enjoyable sucess. I'd like to thank all the volunteers and attendees for making the Geekway to the West such a great event - I'm already eager for next year, despite sheer exhaustion. The night was capped off with a rousing 32 pla...

Comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}. Thursday, June 30, 2005. Game Session Recap for 6/30/05. I'll update this in the morning, but just got back from the St. Louis Boardgame Meetup at Borders. Got to play a lot of good games with a lot of nice folks. Mystery of the Missing Trey Solved! I was confused yesterday why Michael Silbey (armadi) and Chris Darden (cbdarden) were calling the other guy we were playing with Trey. For some reason, I had thought he was. Yet another BGG member met! On to the games! I real...

Comment-link {margin-left:.6em;}. Tuesday, February 28, 2006. I *want* to like Princes of the Renaissance. But it won't let me! Got in a six-player game of Martin Wallace's. Princes of the Renaissance. One of the problems I keep running into with PotR is the intimidation factor. There are so many options from the get go that it's hard to know where to begin. All the city, event and troop tiles are available - so where do you start? The Bottom Line: 6.5. With an 8.5. From first time players. As with a...

Thoughts and information about games. Monday, February 27, 2006. One key to happiness GAMES. For those of you who think the original Carcassonne. I believe Hunters and Gatherers. Could become the Battlefield of the Tribes, by making the same rule change. Also, consider playing Carcassonne (or H&G) in teams, allowing team members to combine their troops in cities, roads, and fields (or forests, rivers, and valleys), to outnumber their opponents. There are some intriguing possibilities here. It was an inte...
