Como también ha pasado en otras ciudades, el puerto antiguo de Düsseldorf se movió fuera del casco urbano y la zona en donde estaba se convirtió, en este caso, en el barrio de las empresas de comunicación. Manteniendo el nombre de puerto (hafen) y añadiendo el nuevo propósito (media) surgió el barrio del Mediahafen. Aquí se pueden encontrar varios edificios emblemáticos de la ciudad.
