A blog about online journalism. Sunday, August 17, 2008. An obligatory end-of-internship post: Reflecting on my Miami Herald experience. Friday was my last day as a Miami Herald. Intern. I've written several posts about the experience (links below), but now I would to provide a more comprehensive look. From the first day, my colleagues were very friendly and welcoming. There are too many people to thank individually and I don't want to leave anyone out, so I'll just say: THANK YOU! Three for my stories, ...

A blog for those who toil in the most specialized, and perhaps the least glamorous, area in the press - trade journalism. Tuesday, June 18, 2013. So it turns out that there is a 60-second long video of a writer named Paul Conley staring into a camera. He doesn't speak. And the purpose of the video is unclear to me. I bring it up here for two reasons:. First, someone who knows of. Second, it occurs to me that the other. Check out the video below. Posted by Paul Conley. Tuesday, June 18, 2013. I, and perha...

Newspaper circulation, a visual reference. October 27, 2009. Very interesting chart of circulation at several major newspapers over the past few decades. The site I got the image from. Is loading suuuuper slow, probably because they got linked for Daring Fireball, so for now I’ve uploaded the image here:. It is apparently a very bad idea to be the Los Angeles Times. Why online ads won’t support a newsroom — Eat Sleep Publish
http://eatsleeppublish.com/why-online-ads-wont-support-a-newsroom/comment-page-1
Why online ads won’t support a newsroom. March 12, 2009. Know that the LA Times has claimed that they can cover their entire editorial payroll with online advertising. It won’t last. Revenue from online ads may grow – yes – but long term ads won’t support the production of content. Why? Because of search ads. Google has almost single-handedly destroyed the business model behind printed content. You can see the problem, can’t you? And the worst part? Their ads work better. Than the old ones. And the lowes...

Free Book Experiment — Eat Sleep Publish
http://eatsleeppublish.com/free-book-experiment
October 22, 2009. Have you seen Cory Doctorow’s Free Book experiment (redux). Cory is offering another free book, with an interesting philosophical approach:. For this project, I’ve taken an oath to lose no money. That means that my capital expenditures have to be as low as possible. In the ideal world, every object I make available will either cost nothing to produce or will be physically instantiated only after it has been ordered and paid for. The question is: would he make. To your reader of choice.
