My portfolio is a collection of various projects and assignments that I have completed in the last few years at the University of Kansas. And the University of Wisconsin. I work across print. Mediums. My work focuses on maps and their relationship to visual storytelling. I'm greatly influenced by critical cartography and feminist theory as I'm always trying to rethink the ways in which we map and think about mapmaking and visual stories. This is a collaborative project with Jacob Sanchez and probably the biggest undertaking I have been a part of. Our goal was to utilize open source data from Natural Earth. Data at the 1:10,000,000 scale. In the end, we also included NASA. Data for Sea Ice data. We then organized the data and began generalizing in ArcMap Deskop before moving into Adobe Illustrator for type placement and design. I then completed terrain work in Photoshop. I'm a cartographer and graduate student at the University of Wisconsin Madison. In the department of Geography. Broadly speaking, I'm interested in all things mapping related. More specifically, I focus on maps and their relationship to visual storytelling. This is a project for an advanced cartographic design course at the University of Wisconsin Madison. The goal was to create a compelling visual story as a longform infographic. My visual story has two storylines: the flight of Syrian refugees throughout the region and Western media's coverage of the crisis. I argue that media attention has overemphasized the impact of refugees in Europe neglecting the impact on Syria's immediate neighbors. I used Natural Earth. For my base data and UNHCR.
